To become a master in literature, you should need some discipline and practice.

Note your first Impressions: 

You should select a book which should not too out from your comfort zone. You should know about the theme of the book or previously known about that book, so this will make you not dull or sleepy.

Searching things on the internet:

Before start reading a book, just Google, the author of the book, so it will be familiar for you to know the author’s background. Go through what are the other books that the same author has done. Doing this will get you to know about the other books era that the author has preferred. 

Take Notes:

Before starting just take a simple note about it

  • 1. What is that book going to give you?
  • 2. What happens to the main character in the story?
  • 3. How was the storytelling?

Annotating:

Underlining, marking, comments will make you active and engaged in reading the book. Try to use a pencil because this will be erased easier where you can remove if mark things wrong this will make you more interesting while marking the things in a neat manner. What you have to mark,

  • 1. When the author gets you any new stuff.
  • 2. When the same thing come again and again signal it

Guessing the essential elements of the story:

Study the characters strength, weakness, and their roles. Please go through the relationship between the character and its name.

Note the significant change that the character does.

Note whose voice tells the story, whether the character’s voice or the author’s voice.

Identify the plots of the story, such as introduction, raising the action, climax, falling action, and resolution. To make yourself active, make you ask the question of what will get happen during the story plot. 

Understand the setting of the story, which is when the story is happening and where it is happening (both place and time).

Analyzing the story:

Identify the tone of the story, what theme it handles, whether it is a comedy, horror, romantic, etc. note how the author says the story in which mood he passes the story. Watch for the phrases, metaphors, small images, and some details. 

Identify the theme:

By identifying the theme, you can get the address of what the literature says. What the author coming to say has been defined in this theme. Now from your side, you agree with the theme or not come to a conclusion. At last, you can rate the literature by yourself.
