It has created a controversy in Taiwan, when attempts to change name of Mandarin textbook in primary school from "Guoyu 國語" to "Huayu 華語". This has been criticized by scholars in Taiwan for continuing the "desinicization" attempt made by former Taiwanese President Chen Shui Bian.

Former Taiwanse President Chen Shui Bian had effected a plan to change name of Mandarin from Guoyu to Huayu in 2007.

Looks like Taiwanese election is drawing nearer and KMT is trying to win votes from pan-green camp.

What do you think?

Best pen for writing Chinese?

In your experience, what is the best pen for writing Chinese characters? I've been using a Pilot Precise V5 (Extra Fine Rolling Ball) and a Pilot Precise Deluxe Bold. These pens flow extremely well, giving brush-like strokes. They also work on a variety of different types of paper without either ripping the paper or the ink getting absorbed too quickly. However, the Extra Fine pen tends to leak and does not last long.

Any recommendations?

Cultural superiority of Traditional Chinese Characters

Below is a talk about traditional Chinese characters between Taiwanese President Ma Ying Jeou and Vincent Fang, the famous talented lyricist behind Jay Chou's (Mandopop Emperor) songs. They are talking about the cultural superiority of traditional Chinese characters.

Ironically, traditional Chinese writing, though more complicated to write, is actually easier to remember based on the logic of 六书 and meanings of ideogram. Traditional Chinese writing is also more aesthetically beautiful (in terms of calligraphy) due to proportional spatial distribution of characters and beauty of Chinese strokes. Lots of Chinese cultural meanings are also destroyed during the simplification process.

What do you think? Is traditional Chinese characters culturally more superior when compared to Simplified Chinese characters?

Help write this Hokkien saying

I met a Taiwanese mother who when asked about her son (living with her), remarked in Hokkien a saying by the Taiwanese:

Kiaw Kia mmm see Kia,
Gong Kia jia see Jia.

Literally,
Smart son is not my son,
Stupid son is mine.

Meaning:
A smart kid will venture away, but not the less intelligent.
(I don't think smart or intelligent has the same meaning as Kiaw (maybe savvy?)

Anyway, please write the above in Chinese.

Thanks,
