Why do the Cantonese call themselves Tang? :g:

Actually it is pronounced as 'Tong' in Cantonese, so we call ourselves 'Tong Yan' - I am one by the way.:)

It is because a major migration of Han Chinese from the north to the south happened during the Tang Dynasty, which is why the Tang Dynasty lives on in the memory and language of the Cantonese.

But ask any other Cantonese about that and they wouldn't have the slightest clue why they call themselves 'Tong Yan'. For instance, my mum was mentioning on the phone to her best pal that a certain couple had yet to choose a 'tong yan mang' (Chinese name) for their child.

After her conversation I asked her why it wasn't 'wah yan mang' instead. She just shrugged and looked bemused, saying that Cantonese never called themselves 'hon yan' (han ren) or 'wah yan' (hua ren).

I assume you are Cantonese too...nice to meet you, er...(well depends if you are a guy or girl) 'siu mui' or 'sai lo'. If you are older than me (I'm 20), then 'tai kor' or 'tai je'.

See ya! :)
