I am having some difficulty uploading pictures

Carlson was the first official emissary to Chinese communists. He spent over a year in Yenan and behind-enemy-lines in Northern China beginning from 1937. Roosevelt was said to have sent this guy after reading Edgar Snow's book. The motive was not clear. Carlson had spent continuous time in China throughout Wuhan City Defence of 1938, and belonged to the "Wuhan Gang", including Stilwell. The woman in the picture was Wu Lili, i.e., the womn who led to Mao divorce with He Zizhen

David Barrett was the guy who led the Dixie Mission to Yenan. He spent the 20s and 30s in Peking and Tientsin, the same way as Stillwell and Marshall. Like most of the White men, Barrett became an old China hands and knew about China and Chinese people after "living with Chinese women" per Carolle Carter's "Mission To Yenan". Like Fairbank, Barrett used his Dixie Mission experiences to become an authority on Chinese studies in America.

John Service, a faithful follower of Stilwell, had the unbelievably blind faith in Zhou Enlai whom Utley had described as someone with all smiles on face except for the eyes. Fairbank shared the same as Service. The two influenced Suzanne Pepper on the book as to China's civil wars. In 70s, after the divulsion of horrors of the Cultural Revolution, Fairbank was said to have commented that Zhou could "fix all", i.e., the abnormality of CR. Service, in an interview in 90s, still shared the same thoughts as 40s.

Chiang had approved the Dixie mission as a result of lobbying by US Vice President Wallace. Though, Chiang refused to allow the Americans use 'mission, but "observer group". US Army and Navy sent in their team as well. Mao and Zhou, while restricting Russians from moving about in Yenan, had given the Americans extreme leisure and freedom, including hunting. The Dixie mission was a product of both Stilwell's gang as well as OSS gang, both fronts being penetrated by Comintern agents extensively. CCP, before the Yalta rumor, had played into the "coalition government" game as proposed by the Americans. It was due to some extremism, like secret offers from Dixie team and OSS to equip the communists with US arms and suplly funds direct to CCP that Hurley pulled the plug to fire off some of the Dixie and embassy staff. There were extensive military cooperations on the possible landing on Shandong coast, for which CCP troops launched a massive campaign against the Japanese for months.

See the amicability between Mao and Ludden. Carolle Carter's book mentioned Mao had provided a girl to Japanese communist leader. Pretty sure something was provided to Americans. After Yalta rumor cam out, Mao changed his cold attitude to teh Russians, and offered to give Vladimirov a girl. Mao offered the same service to Kissinger in 1972. It was a pattern. Need to dig a bit more.

Ludden was the guy fired by Hurley. Hurley, though, was outsmarted by pro-Russian and pro-CCP agents in US Statement. When Hurley resigned, he said US government had been hijacked by "colonialists" [British and cousins of British in US] and "communists" [Comintern agents and CCP agents].

CCP records continuously claimed that Chiang Kai-shek wanted to raid Yenan in a blitz attack. Hu Zongnan's biography repeatedly talked about concern for Americans still in Yenan. The bombing in March 1947 was to scare the Americans away from Yenan. In deed, the group of Americans in attached pic were still having fun with ZHou Enlai just before the campaign kicked off. Americans only became useless to CCP after Dec 1947 when the "Shen Chng Rape" was staged.

To conclude this posting, let me offer you a glimpse of who this ***-looking Smedley was. Just don't vomit it out anything.

She was the woman who tried to broker a matchmaker between Mao and Wu Lili. And, she was also the one who tried to make Mao a world leader, for which Stalin declared Smedley a person non grati.
