This is an amazing place; it's always a great honour to be in the company of learned individuals.
Real Name: Kenny Leong
Where I'm from: Singapore
Age: 27, coming on 28 in a month
Interests: General Chinese culture, really.
Other forums I visit: None (although I was on Aquatic Quotient for a short while).
Background info: I'm born and bred in Singapore. Being brought up in a conservative Chinese family, it seems an interest and inclination to study Chinese culture and history is a natural development.
My profession is a journalist. In my free time (there is very little of it!), I enjoy practising martial arts (I do wing chun) and reading. I am currently on 禮記, and I'm taking my time to wade through it because, I am ashamed to say, much of it is foreign to me.
I stumbled on this forum when I came across a thread posted by Liang Jieming back in 2004 entitled "Where to buy Cheongsam for men" (http://www.chinahist...ongsam-for-men/). I found the thread when I was doing a little research/survey on cheongsam in Singapore. I have a keen interest in the cheongsam, which led to my establishing the Cheongsam Society a while ago. I won't link to the website, for fear of giving the impression that I'm here with ostensible agendas. But if you like, I'll be happy to provide you the website address for your perusal. (There is an article I wrote on "Buying Your First Cheongsam", detailing what to look out for when getting a cheongsam for the very first time.) The Cheongsam Society is still in its infancy — I am working on more features, meantime.
I'm also very interested in Chinese calligraphy and the 笛子, both of which I hope to learn in the coming months. If you know a place to recommend, let me know please!
That pretty much sums up my introduction. Thank you for your time, and it's good to "meet" you!

Where you're from: California, USA
Age: 19
Interests: piano (majoring in music and pharm sci), drawing/illustration, wuxia, Chinese martial arts-- I'm a Choy Li Fut practitioner, any CLF people here?? Also enjoy basketball, indie/alternative rock, hip hop music, kbbq, and Chinese and Korean history; I'm especially interested in the Ming era.
One thing in particular I want to find out more about is the extent to which the Ming had interacted w/ other civilizations outside of its sphere of influence, such as the Europeans, India, Africa, and the Middle East. One thing I remember reading about was Zheng He's short military campaign in Sri Lanka, along with his entire voyage, which was pretty cool. I also remember something about the Portuguese aiding the Ming during the Manchu invasion.
Other forums you visit: rivers and lakes wuxia community http://xiaoshuo.genr...forum/index.php
Background info: 1.5 gen Chinese American, going to university. Always been interested in my culture, and while most of my knowledge of Chinese history has come from my parents, wuxia novels, and movies when I was a kid, I've recently been wanting to learn more facts, and try to break a lot of the stereotypes people have of Chinese, and Asians in general. I also want to promote Chinese martial arts as a practical form of fighting, and naturally am a big supporter of Choy Li Fut. Also, knowing about all the humiliation the Chinese people endured during the 18-1900s gives me much more appreciation for my heritage, and gives me pride in the fact that few other cultures through history have survived so much and continues to thrive. Chinese history is incredibly rich and moving.
I also draw a lot of mostly wuxia-related things: http://fong-saiyuk.d...rt.com/gallery/
I actually found this forum while searching for historical references for Ming-era armor and equipment haha.
btw my favorite manhua is Chen Mou's The Ravages of Time, a graphic novel about the 3 Kingdoms. Best art i've ever seen in any comic ever.

I was once only in to western history until I read the ventures of Marco Polo, in the past year however I have really become entrancted with China and it's spin offs as the longest surviving culture in history. Learning about China tells you much about humanity in a way the western histories never could. My favorite Chinese Emperor up to this point is the Hongwu, for not only driving away the Yuan but his agricultural reforms that helped the common people. I would like to get a basic knowdlge of simplified Chinese.
By the way got Red Cliff for my Birthday best two movies I have seen in a while

Interests: Cars, Ice Hockey, Playing the drums, walking/travelling, Three kingdoms, Video games.
Background info: British born and bred. Originally from London but now living near Norfolk in Eastern England. I'm a race team mechanic by profession so cars are a huge passion of mine. First got exposed to any form of Chinese history while playing the Dynasty Warriors video games in 2004.
