Below are some of the recommended TV series to watch to learn more about han dynasty history. The best historical TV series are produced in mainland China, because they are more accurately portrayed as compared to those from Hong Kong, so I would suggest you to watch those from Mainland China to learn more about chinese history.

You can buy the following VCDs online at

Han Liu Bang

- I've watched this TV series and I have to say it is very well-shot and accurately portrayed the life story of Liu bang, the founder of Han dynasty. Included are famous characters such as Xiao He, Zhang Liang, Han Xin, Xiang Yu, Fan Zheng, Fan Kuai, Ying bu etc. The battle scenes may not be that elaborate but it does show the story of many characters.

Da Han Tien Zi (Han Emperor)

- I've watched this TV series, and suffice to say, it's about the early story of Han Wudi , Liu Che, about his romance and ascendence to power. I was expecting to see more about Han Wudi's ambitious military campaign, but they were not shown in this series as it was about his early story. The series has been dramatised to include some romance and included are some famous characters such as General Wei Qin, Li Ling, Sima Qian, Zhang Qian, Huo Qubin etc.

I watched Da Han Tien Zi on tv, Dongfang Shuo was also a major character. He looked so much like Zhuge Liang, and Kangxi in Kangxi Empire.

I think Dongfang Shuo is too over-rated in Da Han Tian Zi.. I don't think the "Tui En Lin" 推恩令 (a policy of weakening the feudal lords's power) was contributed by him historically, although in that show, it indicated it was his idea.

But the actor for Dongfang Shuo is a good actor. He also acted his role in Kangxi empire..

yeah.. Hanwu Dadi (Wu Emperor of Han or "Han Wudi") is currently the 'hottest' TV series in China produced by CCTV. I've just bought the DVD a few days ago (during my trip to China) and am now watching it. I think, it's brilliantly shot, esp. the warfare scene with XiongNu, artistic scenary, not to mention the han-fu (han costumes). You should also see Han Wudi's great political and military strategy.. how he won the war against XiongNu? It wasn't an easy task, considering that the Xiong Nu force threatened Han for more than 70 years.

You might have to wait for a few months before you can buy in US. It's still not even available in Singapore, where I live. I think, you can only buy it in China now. Try the internet to see if you can order it.

The Hanwu Dadi not only depicts the story of Han Wudi (Liu Che), but also Han Jindi (Liu Qi), who is the father of Han Wudi. The show has many military battle scene (including XiongNu and Han cavalry), chinese court scene, hanfu etc.

I can only described Han Wudi as the most famous Emperor in Han dynasty. He's summarised as "Xiong Cai Da Lue (雄才大略)" (a man of great strategy and political skill)

Two different fictional series about the life of Xin Zhui, the female mummy found in the Mawangdui tomb in Changsha, have recently been released in China:

Why did they let Chen Bao Guo play Han Wu Di (if i remember his face correctly).
I think Jiang Wen would do a better job because he looks more like ancient Han.
