Please keep this thread clean, its for the physical anthropology of chinese population purpose.

I think The general Facial Characteristics of northern Chinese people are: tall nose, more single-folds, long and well-defined face, hairs are more thick and straight, lighter and taller.

In general Southern Chinese: higher chances of having double eye-folds,flattened out nose, shorter face, hairs are more softer, darker and shorter.

Anyone wants to add more to it?

I thought that the southern Chinese had longer and more angular faces than the northern Chinese. Also, not alot of southern Chinese have flattened out noses.

Erm, no. North Asians have long, broad faces with brachycephalic (short in profile) skulls. Whereas south Chinese, south east Asians have shorter, narrower faces with dolichocephalic (long in profile) skulls.

Anyway, some of my observations, after seeing thousands of Chinese people from north and south.

Northern Chinese: Broader, longer face, bigger jaw/chin, higher and slimmer nose, taller, broader build, usally straight hair, smaller eyes, flatter face, higher cheekbones.

Southern Chinese: Shorter face, narrower face, more compressed cheekbones, flatter nose. sometimes wavy hair, bigger eyes, sunken eyes, fuller lips, less facial flatness.

Erm... not sure what "profile" here you mean.
Do you mean the thickness or...?

The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie—deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought. - JFK

In many southerners, f.e Chiang Kai Shek, the back of the skull is long when viewed from the side. (dolichocephalic) Similar to an African only less extreme.

Whereas in north Asians, it's the opposite.

I think perhaps you should explain a little bit about the cephalic index, so as not to confused folks here with terms like dolichocephalic brachycephalic etc.

cephalic index is the measure of the wideness of the head(left to right) versus the length of the head(up to down).

dolichocephalic (index <70) refers to one whose head is relatively long compared to wide.

brachycephalic (index>75) refers to one whose head is relatively wide compared to long.

mesocephalic refers to those in between ..

This is a rather out-dated method of comparing race though, in my opinion

One of the reasons why some folks have a flatter back of the head is how we were cared for as infants. When we are born our skull is still soft and too much lying on the back tend to result in a 'flat' back of head. contrast this with say Thais or other cultures where there is a culture of making sure the skull develop well as infants. This custom exist among some Taiwanese as well.

A careful reading of the above should show I am not saying the shape of the head is a matter of nurture versus nature, just in case some of you are inclined to argue about that.

I thought this is a thread about Southern Chinese people?? Your picture collection have more Northern people (Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi) than Southern people (Guangdong only?)Any way good work, (it would be great if you can find pics from every provinces , North and South... and let people here make judgement for themselves ..
