Why is it that the Cantonese in Panyu, GD, Republic of China.. especially the women look like Northern Chinese Mainlanders, especially the hair style = the long ponytail lol ? In HK and Taiwan, having long hiar without ponytails are in style and also short hair as well..

Check this video of Panyu, GD, ROC ->

Look like northern chinese mainlander?? Without knowing it's Panyu, I would have guessed that this is in a southern city for the people look typically southern Chinese mainlander, same as in Fuzhou or Kunming people. Northerners are taller, bigger built and their facial look tend to be less of variations than that of southerner.

oh ok.. but the point of the video is that seeing chinese women in Panyu with ponytails is a culture shock to me, cuz mos cantonese people i know here rarely have their ponytails tied up in public, except Northern Mainlanders =/ I guess most of these cantonese are Hong Kongers and i don't see Taiwanese with them either (or am i wrong)?

I guess most Chinese cities and their people hair style or clothing style etc.. are pretty uniformed north to south. Have you been to China? HK and TW do have different hairstyle. However in big cosmopolitan cities such as BJ, SH, there are more diversity in fashion and hairstyle and (in my opinion) in par with HK. Even at Shenzhen, a big modern mainland city at border with HK, the styles there are more HK but sometimes, you do find interior style there too :)

There are plenty of Taiwan people with pony tails. I am not sure of Hong Kong people, but I thought I saw a few in Hong Kong when I was there a few years ago. I think the current fasion for younger generation of girls/women with long hair would be letting it hang loose and not tie up because that would be the prettiest look. That style was also very popular in Taiwan when I was growing up because long, silky, and smooth (and straight :cry^: ) black hair is always the height for hair fashion in both men and women's eyes for Asian women whether it was in the imperial time or in modern days. However, for some girls or women in very hot and humid weather and who do not worry too much of their looks (like me), we generally tie up our hairs in pony tails or any other ways to get them off our shoulders. For some girls or women who have very thick and wavy hairs, we had to tie our hair up, or we would really look like lions with lions' mane.

The people in that city do look like southerners more than the northerners.

yea.. we should be united instead of putting each other down... regionalism causes hate, civil wars, and a forever sad world.

The OP exaggerates in some of the photos he posted. He tend to find the most "Korean looking" northern Chinese photos as possible and the most "Vietnamese looking" southern Chinese photos. The reality is that you sometimes find intermediate looks. I have seen northern Chinese with large eyes and flat face and some southern Chinese with smaller eyes and thin face.

i live in oversea where the majority of chinese are cantonese and other southern chinese, and they do look different from where i was from. i'm speaking on average. i see both southern chinese and northern chinese everyday in my life, sometimes i even feel kinda strange when i go to chinatown(cantonese and fujianese) area, because the people there looks so different, almost se asian looking(vietnamese,thais...)

^I don't know about New York, but when I visit the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles, I really cannot tell the difference between mainland Cantonese and mainland northerners inside a restaurant or the street. Only the body size (ie height and weight) is a better indicator. In terms of face, they generally have the similar Han Chinese face.

The only ones I can tell apart are the American born Chinese. They dress different and usually have more athletic. muscular frames. Their mannerisms are different too.

I think you mean the Chinese Vietnamese and Chinese Thais.. in chinatown there are even vietnamese and other south east asians who open shops & shop in chinatowns ie Pho Restaurants. They like to stick with the cantonese for some odd reason(i find them weird myself & don't want to associate myself with them - they are distinguishble by their look and heavy vietnamese accent or they just simply speak vietnamese), i guess because back in their home country cantonese was the business language, especally in Saigon or even Bangkok.. where many vietnamese or thais can speak cantonese as a 2nd language. Admit you see pho restaurants Dearcoolz lol Even Filipinos like to shop in chinatown. See how popular Cantonese is in vietnam (Sung in vietnamese in the first 3/4 and the remaining 1/4 is in cantonese) -> http://www.youtube.c...feature=related

But the thing with Northern Chinese people is that some don't look Han and look more mongolian or turk like, and it's those that i find strange and alien - because i never seen chinese like that, except on some videos based on Mongolia, etc. I agree with hhug that what makes them distinct is their height.

Real Cantonese people would look more like your typical chinese person like Yi Jianlian and me ^^
