I was planning to retire there, but when I found out how much it cost at the retirement village, I gave up. I think better look for another place to retire... ok, I plan well in advance <_<

Is it very expensive to retire in China?? I was thinking of retiring there as well...I thought that it will cheaper over there.....

Thanks UrPersia... 99 year lease for a flat huh? Sounds pretty crazy to me.

Incomprehensible to me too. Do I think I'd live 99 yrs after I purchase a flat at say 30?

I believe the rates would be like the ones in Australia - the cost of living might not be as high as Australia, but being non-citizen, I am sure, they would expect the expat to pay more.

I've got some business dealings in China, medium sized cities in China are generally way cheaper to live in than Singapore (let alone other places) if you learn how to eat local food and use local transport, plus all that low cost tuina or foot reflex massage. If you live like an expatriate, it is definitely more expensive, but the same if you live like an expatriate in Singapore - no hawker food, only restaurants, taxis all the time, live in private apartments "near town", send kids to international schools - i think even 10K sgd/mth is not enough.

While I do not know what is the cost of living in China, I tend to agree that if anyone wants to live elsewhere, it is cheaper for that person to assimilate into that culture and start living like a local.

I had heard from a colleague that it is actually not cheap to live and work in China (if you go on local terms, not expat terms). She was considering migrating there, until she went on a holiday and realised that if she took up a job there on local terms, she would not be able to afford her current lifestyle.

On the other hand, I had heard from a university classmate that Brunei is a cheap place to retire. She spent some time working in Brunei. Be warned though... she cautioned us that we would probably die of boredom if we ever retired in Brunei. :P

Hi:

Sorry for the intrusion but I am a Singaporean and I am actively preparing to retire in China.

In fact, I am documenting my process in the hope that Singaporeans and others considering the same plans
can join together to build a RV concept.

In my opinion, retirement should be low cost, healthy living, easy amenities, like-minded friends and fresh air.
You can't get this in S'pore but you can in China with some planning. Also, retiring in China also means a base
to explore the rest of China's culture and history.

If you are indeed interested, please head over here for further discussion.

Thanks and regards to all.

You don't want to live in the Midwestern U.S... trust me.
