For most of the first 3 decades of the Republic.. China was divided up by many warlords.... many of them left some seriously funny stories behind.... (you probably need to be able to read chinese to seriously understand all the fun)
I'll start with arguablly one of the funniest... the Sang Dong Warlord Zhang Zhong Chang 張宗昌 was a man who had really no literature background what so ever (in fact he was probably illiterate.) once he heard Liu Bang's famous poem 大風歌 "The big wind poem" in which the first phrase was 大風起兮雲飛揚 (the clouds soar as the big wind rise) he said "I will write a big wind song too!!" and his first phrase in an attempt to match the ryem was 大砲開兮轟她娘 (the cannon opens to bomb his mother) XD
The complete comparison.
大風歌 by Liu Bang
Some funny warlord jokes of the early republic
