I thought it'd be nice to show some examples of Chinese dynasty clothes from Chinese illustration book (I got it from Chinese art class back in China). I scanned two pages and added English translation.

I'd say Tang is still the best looking period especially in women's clothing designs.

Tang and Han both are my favorite. I kinda like the Han 'court' robes more than the Tang ones (the Tang ones don't overlap it seems), but Tang does have lots of different clothes, especially for women

The Qing, parts of it I like, but others are kinda lame in my opinion (the clothes not shown, but the ones worn by the unarmored infantry and such)

Indeed, Han's court robes are the best.

I also like the Han or Pre Qin Emperor's dress...
The Tang Dancing girl looks pretty...I don't think I'd like the overweight style then though...I like the Pre Qin girl too...she looks almost as if floating.

I like the example of the Han General and the Ming General's armor. The Tang General...I like his purposeful pose, but not really his armor example...the Song General would look better if his armor were less obscured.

I don't really like Qing's armor. I just don't. Something about the helmet being a huge tower, and the armor making all the generals look SUPERFAT in all paintings I've seen.

Agreed, TM. The nonarmored infantry garb with the rank written on it is lame...a big "Shoot me here!" target. I just never got why they did that...or was it simply an invention of television dramas and soap operas?

And I also don't like the Qing Empress...well, in general, I like the Hanfu styles predating Qing better. The kind that the Kimono was based off of, with the two overlapping lapels.

Yang, I've seen the 'shoot me' infantry in a few of the paintings linked here, so it's probably not just dramas.

Man... I kinda feel emberassed that the 'West' began contact with the East at the point we looked the goofiest, hahah.

What I do like about the Qing though is their 'Manchu robes' style that qipao comes from. The towering helmets are also pretty cool, it's just the balloon armor that's kinda dissapointing :P

I believe that the Qing armor that you see on the drawing traces its roots back to the Ming. The Qing armor is simply a copy of the late Ming armor. And yes, the Ming armor that is portrayed in the drawing belonged to the earlier Ming Dynasty. In the latter periods of the Ming, armors grew to be more practical and westernized. Archeological digs found that during the 16th century, the Ming employed chain mail quite like that used by Christian and Muslim armies. In addition, the use of brigandine or nail armor became more popular than the traditional, early Ming mountain-pattern armor. The balloon armor seen on the Qing general was used during the days of the Ming Emperor Chong Zhen by the Ming army as well. I will include a drawing of late Ming Dyasty Armor if I can find it on the Internet.

A picture of Ming armor evolution:

The general wearing red is an earlier Ming general. The brimmed hat soldier dons the typical Ming infantry wear.
The general in the front row from the 16th century is wearing a chain mail. The soldier to his right wears brigandine armor quite like the Qing armor: this is the Ming armor during the days of Emperor Chong Zhen.

... and there really isn't much difference between the Changpao of the Ming emperors and the Qing dynasty!
