My red chop was made in Guangzhou but I have another one made of white/beige marble which I carved myself from a piece from a construction site.
Had mine done for my 15th birthday at good ol' Nau Che Soei (Chinatown).

Got quite a few chops done, lost some, still have others. All were done in China during my first trips there in 86 and 87. They tell the story of the various chinese names I was given... amusingly, I have no chop with the last one I used...
My two favourites are one made from the tip of a horn, made in Shandong (some small place between Tai'an and Qufu, which had a small mountain and a temple on it), and a massive brown and black one with just my surname on it, made by the father of a friend, in Kunming.

My chops. The "pig" is from Guangzhou. The "lion" is the one I carved.
I have only one, planning to get another; this time might be from China. If everything goes as planned, we should be at Chengdu this Autumn.
What kind of material would be best? I had white stone for my first one. I am not looking for anything too expensive.

Mine is green and some sort of jadeite (if that's a word for jade-like stone). Cost a pretty penny too.

Hehehe chops today are not that cheap anymore. I remember when I got that chop in Guangzhou, it only cost the the equivalent of SGD$1 back in 1990.Sorry, sorry. I just can't resist saying 'This little piggy...'

Thanks, will be checking on the jadeite.
nothing with the tiger motif? Thought you would want something with your zodiac sign?
The lion chop on the other hand is scrap material from site and completely FREE!

Oh yeah, another thing about chops these days. I helped an Indian friend of mine get a chop done recently. It was not cheap, about SGD$40 but it had a very nice and intricate dragon carving at the top which I though looked pretty good until I took a blade and started to slice off little bits that looked rough and unfinished and realised that they use very, very, very soft stone these days (more like reconstituted stone).

Well, I tried to make it a lion. It kinda has all the characteristics of a lion. It's got fangs, and that ball the lions put their paw on. It's also got ears and the typical "bumpy" hair of chinese carvings of lions...Does look rather squat and stunted, now that I come to think of it.

Kekekeke, it's one of those things when you were a kid you'd go "Cool! Gotta make one for myself", and then you go and make one and find it so tough you give up and swear you'll never make another one ever again.Coulda fooled me. You really could.
Don't blame him. I asked him to split the thread. I need the thread on my book "clean" in case I miss someone ordering copies. And Wang, you joker!! All of a sudden I was left with half a thread on Siege Warfare!!
