Vietnamese was from Hong river delta.
Koreans was from Yalu aka Amrok river
Northern Chinese was from Yellow river
Southern Chinese was from Yangtze river
Thais/Cambodian was from Mekong river

All the civilizations were created from major river areas.
And this was way how modern ethnicity was separated due to isolation.

The only major flaw I see is that ethnic Thais are actually from Gwangxi and part of Yunnan Southern China.
I do agree that Khmer/Cambodians are the natives of mainland south east asia ie. today's thailand, burma, southern vietnam and cambodia.

I know this thread is not new, but I will add my 2 cents.

Knowing the complex history as well as location of Viet Nam being the cross roads of Asia, I believe it can be difficult to define a general "look."

As far as I know, I am 100% Viet (living in the U.S.) which can be a little misleading. I understand that the Viet population in the States, does not represent the entire population of Viet Nam, but I believe from what I see within my own family, that it can be quiet common among most all Viets.

My fathers side is pure Viet and has a look that has been described as someone who is mixed with Asian and African. Big eyes without the Epicanthic folds, flat nose bridge, wide nostrils and very thick lips. Straight jet black hair.

My mothers side looks very different. Big eyes without the Epicanthic folds but they are deep set. Very high nose bridge without the wide nostrils, but with thick lips. Hair is brownish/dark red and very course and not so straight, very similar hair textures to that of South Pacific islanders. Here in the U.S. her side of the family is often mistaken for hispanic by other hispanics. Also on her side, I have a few relatives that can pass for South Asian Indian.

I have a few relatives that look Han Chinese too. Most of my relatives look neither Chinese, nor South Asian Indian, but more like what the indigenous people were. Like a mix between Southern Chinese and Australian Aborigine.

Most Asians here can't tell my ethnicity and think i'm Filipino.
Most white and black Americans think I'm some type of Asian/black mix, since I have often been told I look like Tiger Woods.
Most hispanics think i'm Mexican.

I am always spoken to in Spanish whenever I meet Hispanics, but I have never been spoken to in any East Asian language. Once I was spoken to in Hindi by a South Indian.

Most often I will be mistaken for Mexican or Asian/black mix...but i'm pure Viet.

So you see, my point is that Viet Nam is quiet diverse and there can be many different "looks."

Vietnamese look like chinese, but some look like cambodians.. I guess it's because of the invasion of southern Vietnam that use to belong to the champa kingdom.

''Vietnamese was from Hong river delta.
Koreans was from Yalu aka Amrok river
Northern Chinese was from Yellow river
Southern Chinese was from Yangtze river
Thais/Cambodian was from Mekong river''

Northern Chinese = sinicized steppe invaders + local population....Huaxia was not even northern chinese

Southern chinese = sinicized yues + migrants.....yangtze river yue peoples were different from modern day southerners. This list needs to be revised since it was created by an ignorant Korean nationalist from KKKKoreansentry.com for china bashing.

Original chinese was from Yellow river(spoke old chinese and they were not northern or southern chinese, just chinese)
Baiyue lived under the Yangtze (tai-kadai, hmong-mien, austroasiatic, austronesian)

If the original chinese tribes in the yellow river truly spoke an ancient form of mandarin, then they are indeed northerners.

I think one of the problems in these lists is that it assumes Yues were all the same, but it seems that it was just a general broad classification system used by China to categorize a large group of different peoples in the south.

Vietnamese is NOT one race just as americans are NOT of one race (ie. white, african, hispanic).

Southern vietnam used to belong to cambodia and not champa. So there are many ethnic khmer/cambodians people there who are dark skinned.

Champa kingdom is in middle vietnam and the cham people have mostly fled to Malaysia. They are also dark skinned and is the same race as the Malays.

I visited Vietnam recently and when I visited Chinatown I swear I couldn't differentiate between Vietnamese and Chinese. So we just went around, if they were pale-skinned, I would try to use some Chinese and realize that they are Vietnamese.

But Gosh, Vietnamese are really short.

I am always spoken to in Spanish whenever I meet Hispanics, but I have never been spoken to in any East Asian language. Once I was spoken to in Hindi by a South Indian.

I know ur pain. I visited Vietnam and honestly some looked Filipino, some looked Chinese, some looked Thai, some looked Malay and some looked Indian.

Anyway, how can a South Indian speak to you in Hindi? Hindi is generally spoken by North Indians. South Indians speak Punjabi or Tamil or something.

BTW Can someone tell me which race do I look like (a mix is feasible too)? I'm Chinese, but then... Of course there's no such thing as PURE HAN

Ok so here's a rough description.

Dark brown hair (turns light brown when hits the sun), dark brown eye pupils (again, turns light brown when hit by sun).

My original skin color (before tanning) is white (close to Caucasians?) and when I get tanned it looks brownish-red (kind of like those Japanese or Mongols in harsh weather)

My nose is short and flat with wide nostrils (I think this is quite common in Vietnamese), my overall face shape is slightly longer than round and I have high and wide cheekbones.

My eyes, it's a very hard thing to describe. My eyes were slightly larger than slitty (ok u can laugh) when I was little and then I started to try n pry my eyes open so now they look normal and I'm used to it

But when I open them now my forehead gets a lot of creases (meaning I'm stressing too hard and this is not my original eye shape).

Then I have obvious epicanthal folds. I'm 5 ft 11, 13 yrs old :P Long limbs, thin n small lips.
I'm a guy btw

I have double eyelids.

Grandparents from Southern China so possible Viet-blood mix.

Thanks in advance :D pls help.

I don't know, there are quite a few ethnic Kinh I've met that are well above 6 ft tall, might be due to genetic influence from some Han groups, so they aren't pure ethnic Kinh.
