I got to say that of the 3 southern Chinese groups: Cantonese, Chiu-Chow and Hakka

Cantonese are more laid back and not as diligent on money compared to Chiu-Chows and Hakkas. The thrift is very extreme among the Chiu-Chow and Hakka. Cantonese are money-oriented and thrift too, but not as much as compared to those 2 other groups. I think it is related to the history. Chiu-Chow and Hakka people always seem to be on the move, going from one place to another. Of course, money is very important for survival.

The spelling of Teochiu is actually different from where you from. I seen others spell it Teochew, Teochiu, Diojiu, Chaozhou, Chiu Chow, Chiu Chau in so many different wayz. All I know is our language is closely related to the Hokkien ua. The famous quoted your talking about is: "Gaginang Pat Si Bho Sang Gang" "Our own people beat us to death no problem." It's just like saying in Cantonese: "Ji Gai Yan Da Sae Mo Shuang Gone." This language and culture is slowly being lost in today society. But then again only our people would know how to speak it. I'm Teochiu Cambodian. Too bad our culture doesn't have enuff history for us to traces bacc too. Not enuff history on the net for us to do our research and learn more bout the language, culture and tradition. The only way we will be able to survive in a society that is alwayz changing is to preserved what we can and practice as much as possible so we be able keep our language a live.

You can determine the origin of the people by the language they speak. Is it such a coincidence that chaozhou dialect is so similar to zhangzhou dialect in fujien province ?

Someone told me that it was part of the fujien province until some high level minister gave that territory of fujien to gwangdung province. That's why they are just neighbours to each other.

Once the chaozhou area was separated from zhangzhou, the 2 minnan dialects diverged to have their own characteristics. See

I don't know but from what it appears to be, you all say it is from Guangdong. I had a quarrel with this person iMisogynist on YouTube because he said southern Chinese were barbarians and Baiyue and stuff. However, when I said I was Teochew, that seemed to shut him up. Anyway, it is true that cantonese are Baiyue (Barbarians), northern Vietnamese are also Baiyue. So they say, Cantonese are not han Chinese. They belong to barbarians that moved over to southern china via northern India a long time ago. As such, southern Chinese are darker in skin colour and generally shorter than northern Chinese. Well, if I'm Teochew and I belong to the south, I am the tallest in my class and also the whitest in class. But if that's so, does it mean that Teochew are Northern?

They sent me links here and there, on Wikipedia etc. saying that Southern Chinese are barbarians and as it appears, they seem to feel superior of their own homeland in china and that they have "authentic" han blood when they have been polluted so much by Jurchens, Mongols, Koreans, Manchus, Tibet etc.

I haven't seen any tall Cantonese or Taishanese although I have been to HK and Guangzhou for nearly 25 times before. All the Cantonese / Taishanese I have seen never get past 180cm.

How would you define quite tall? It's different in everyone's perspective. I would define quite tall as about 180++cm. Most Cantonese and Taishanese I see are only hovering around the height 175cm for males and about 162cm for females.

China girls are really short somehow, unless they are models. Many people in Singapore who carry the distinct China accent are often really small, only about 157 or 158cm.

Anyway, yea, sure though, Northern China has it's own dialects but not as much as us Southern Chinese. And you must remember, one of the few first dynasties of China originated from only a small piece of land in Northern China, and not Southern China.

There is actually no purely "authentic" Han Chinese, we are all a mix of minorities, dialects and bloodlines.

In my country, Singapore, in my class, out of 40 students, there are about 7 Cantonese, 20 Hokkien, 3 Teochew (including myself), 1 Hubei Chinese and 3 Hindu and 6 Tamil students.

So in total, out of forty, my class is made up of 30 Southern Chinese and 1 Northern Chinese. I can say that Northern Chinese are a rare sight in Singapore.

These phrases you listed are vulgars.
If one only knows vulgars but don't know how to speak properly, what is the point ?

Perhaps Cantonese is not really frequently heard in schools

I have this vibe that you're not teo chew... because a real teochew will never make these kind of comments. In addition, you right away talk about "Cantonese are barbarians because they are all descended from Baiyue people," when the main topic is about the origins of Chaozhou People. Most likely you're a Northern Chinese trying to divide Southern Chinese people.

Cantonese and Taishanese are said to have come from the Central Plains, which is why are dialect is similar to Hakka, whom also come from the Central Plains.

Mrclub is right .. Taishanese can be quite tall. Look at NBA Yao Ming # 2 "Yi Jianlian" (易建联) who's from Heshan, Guangdong (Taishan Area) and he's 7ft tall.



Taishanese come from the Central Plains, along with the Hakka. You can see that by looking at the facial features of average Taishanese. Here are some videos of Taishanese people:

It's true that Teochew are the most business oriented people among Chinese. For example, the richest man in Asia is Hong Kong Billionaire, Li Ka Shing, who is of Teochew background. Most of the billionaires in Thailand and Singapore and Teochew. In my opinion, both Hokkien and Teochew are very business oriented. I know the minnan people are very Buddhist, just look at Taiwan, Fujian, Chaoshan area, and Hainan. Even Hong Kong, because of the Teochew influence.

Do you think there is a link between Buddhism and being successful in business ? Because i think buddhism teaches you to help each other, just like the jewish people (who believe in helping each other) ... hence which is why Jewish are very successful in business and most are quite wealthy or well off.

Taishanese are more into culture & arts and politics... which is why most of the famous Hong Kong stars come from Taishan area. If we were to compore ourselves to Europe, I think the Teochew/Hokkien are like the British and the Taishanese/Cantonese are like the French LOL

No ! teochiu and hokkien are also Han chinese and they are also from the central plains. But their migration time is different from the cantonese and hakka.

This can be seen by their languages, teochiu and hokkien are from Old chinese era which is around Han dynasty, Jin dynasty migration whereas cantonese and hakka are from Middle chinese era which is from Tang and Sung dynasty era.

This is similar to the migrants to southern china today from the Central plains who speak Mandarin. But they are still considered Han chinese. So they are from different era of migration.

The central plain used to speak Middle chinese during Tang, Sung dynasty but now they speak Mandarin.

Of course, there may be some intermarriage between the han chinese men and the local baiyue women after the migration from the north but basically they still have han blood ancestry.

The hokkien may have intermarried with the Miao-Yao group as there are 'She' minority still living there today while the Cantonese intermarried with the 'Zhuang' minority. Some 'zhuang' words can be seen in cantonese language.

Please don't say the average cantonese /taishanese are tall. They are of same average height as the hokkien/teochiu.

Usually the older generation are shorter than the newer generation due to poor nutrition in the past which will affect the height.
There are many Hokkien people who are tall nowadays, just look at taiwanese serials.
