I guess if you take point 1 (Only Foreigners) and point 4 (No Dogs) all together, you get the idea of "No Dogs Or Chinese".

Come on, Honam, not even this is true. No. 1 reads "The Gardens are reserved for the foreign commandry", that is the colonial military! There is no mention of "foreigners" or even "Chinese" whatsoever. Don't tell me I am the only one who can read a simple sign.

Yes, sorry, you did not say this. I mistakenly thought you were equating "foreigners" with the Chinese, but it is pretty obvious that, on the park sign, the colonial administration refers to their staff as foreigners, that is to themselves.

So, in conclusion, the posting by Rick completely backfired: in fact, there is nothing in the sign to suggest Rick's interpretation. The guy was so intent at proving the existence of such a racist remark that he did not even bother to read the sign. Poor showing.

Another version of the hideous sign

From the Travel Guide on Shanghai (Bradley Mayhew, ed. Lonely Planet, p. 122):

HuangpuPark was the site of the infamous (and legendary) sign that forbade entry to "dogs or Chinese". In fact there never was such a sign, though the spirit of the law certainly existed. The first of the five park regulations adopted in 1916 forbade the entry of dogs and bicycles; a separate regulation later denied entry to Chinese, except for Chinese nannies, servants and friends of foreigners. The regulation was finally rescinded in 1928 but has since become a powerful symbol of Shanghai's semi-colonial rule.

And for those who like conspirancies, there is an easy explanation for the inexistence of the real sign saying "No dogs and Chinese allowed":

Hehe Yeah, that´s what "trolls" do... post the same comment all around and in different forums, but rarely answer when they are questioned. I´m not such a fan of Bruce Lee, even I like a song dedicated to him:

No, not at all. Many a topic is someone pointing out the content of a link to engender conversation. This is no different. What's interesting to note in this case is that the sign itself has pretty much been 'proven' to be a myth and yet the topic doesn't die.

Every generation (and what's the on the Internet, 90 days?) has to find its own way. ^__^

And besides, he's pretty much already showed his hand in reviving a moribund topic...which we seem to be straying from......

All Rick did was show the "original picture" of the sign, which is where the mythical "No Dogs and Chinese allowed" sign came from. He didn't even give any comment on it, so I don't see why there's such an outburst against him. He didn't go on a rant, he just posted a picture. He's a new member, and finding the original sign wasn't easy. I'd say such contribution should be rewarded, not punished. Or am I missing something here?

Really? The funny thing is Bruce Lee was not even a Chinese. He only held US citizenship and was born and raised in San Francisco. Only after a brawl, he was sent as an adolesence to the crown colony of Hongkong, not to the communist mainland. He was one fourth German, married a British woman and was reportedly proud of the blue eyes of his son. The guy could have applied for the post of UN secretary general for America, Asia and Europe alike.

Do you recall Rick saying "We should keep this picture online" (that's the topic description)? I don't want to blame him for posting this up. Like Mei Houwang said, such historical facts should be well kept for the generations to come but I can sense that he has an ulterior motive. The first time I looked at his post, it had already receive a red -1 rating. Despite getting negative comments, he said nothing to defend himself. Instead, he dropped another link for us to have a look. To be honest, I do think he's pretty darn cunning.

He was a Chinese with a mix of foreign blood. His mom was of German ancestry. To address him as a German is pretty awkward. He doesn't look the least bit like a German.
He was born in San Francisco, raised in HK and buried in Seattle. To add that up, he's an American Chinese. His burial in Seattle caused many outrage by fellow fans in HK, who insisted that he should be buried in HK.

But it is important, IMO, and I agree with him. Just as important as the Enola Gay or the bus Rosa Parks rode on. While it's true that the sign doesn't say what Rick wants it to, it is a reminder of how petty people can be and hopefully a fixed point to measure how far we've come...or how much further we need to go.

What's needed here is to not become enraged by a rumor, which you and I believe to be Rick's goal. I have faith in human nature and I knew the members of CHF wouldn't rise to the bait. And mostly, we didn't.

Let's keep this thread clean (move Bruce Lee to his thread, if you would like to continue discussing him) so that when the mistaken sign resurfaces in a few years time, there will be even less to accuse humankind of.
