Eh you guys are all very lucky leh. Can see and feel the atmoshphere and action lor. I only see on TV nia and in far far far away Vienna !
But hor, my Austrians collegues were commenting that Singapore very nice leh, especially at night very swee and the liu lians were the highlight. Hearing that, somehow I feel proud to be Singaporean

Furthermore can see some cars buang so quite fun loh! Aiyoh, my singlish like lagi jialat leh...Feels rusty but good to use it in an offhand manner I've just complete three posts (in german, 'standard english; and Singlish), maybe I should post one in phonetic Teochew too haha. So, "Wat Lau E" originates from "Wat Lan" (literally means "my dick" in Hokkien)..yes, it's really vulgar, but is used in Singlish to mean "oh my gosh/d****.". Singaporean Hokkien is really crude, as the words were brought in by lots of uneducated uncultured Hokkien immigrants to Singapore before 1945. And "Sibe" (a corrupted version of Hokkien word "Si Pe") means "dead father" in hokkien and means "very" in Singlish.

I think, the Singapore government is so much against Singlish precisely because Singlish gives an impression of a "low-culture" as reflected by lots of vulgar hokkien words in Singlish. Despite the fact that Singlish was subjected to mockery or criticism by lots of foreigners, there were a lot of Singaporeans who defended Singlish, because it gives Singapore a 'unique identity'. It's clearly something "Singaporean" and brought out something about local Singaporean culture.

Singlish, after all is a Singapore dialect or 新加坡话

Hokkien Vulgarity:


KNN (kan li niah 干你娘) is a hokkien vulgarity that means "f" your mother. (You don't need me to explain what "F" means, right?). Such Hokkien vulgar word should be avoided at all times.

Even NN (li niah -your mother) is also considered to be a Hokkien vulgarity, as it's the short-form of KNN.

Also, the Singlish word "talking c**k" (meaning "chit-chat") is also of a vulgar origin, as it originates from the Hokkien word "Kong Jiau Ue 讲鸟话" (speaking bird/c**k language). The word "c**k" can be translated as "male genitals". Sometimes, the Singlish word "c**k-up" (meaning "screw up/make a mess") can sound really vulgar.

Finally, "Chee Bai/Ci Bai 膣屄" is one of the rudest hokkien vulgarity in Singlish that means "female genital/vagina".

Other Hokkien vulgar word include "Lan Jiau 膦鸟"， "Lan Pha 膦脬"(all meaning "male genital").

Anyway, singlish doesn't necessary contain Hokkien or Techew, its all in the bad grammar and south east asians expressions.

eg. "Can or cannot leh brother!" "Wah very hot ho!" "I see you people not happy is it?" are all singlish without Hokkien etc.

Mix in a bit of malay, hokkien, cantonese or other chinese dialects and you have Singlish.

"c**k is not a bad word, its simply means male chicken."

Wah, I very Garang sia, can talk c**k and say singlish like no body business ah!

You might want to add these :

1. Gua Lan Ay (or corrupted version "Wa Lau Ay") 我卵的 (my dick)

2. Si beh 死爸 (your dead father)

3. Nin beh 你 爸 (An expression meaning 'I am superior because I am your father' ? )

All these have changed in meaning from the original meaning because the younger generation used these expression without knowing the exact original meaning due to 'peer pressure'.

Correct me on number 2 and 3 if I am wrong. But that should be the original meaning.
