Cao Cao, if eliminated at Battle of Red Cliff might have changed history altogether.

So according to RTK, why did Zhuge Liang decide to take a gamble and use Guan Yu at Hua Rong?

Surely he should know that despite of the military pledge, Guan Yu would let Cao Cao off in view of his debt earlier on.

Couldn't he have rotated military operations with other commanders?

Lets say Cao Cao was killed by Zhao Yun, Zhang Fei or Guan Yu. If Cao Cao's forces was killed, Sun Quan will get Liu Bei and at that time, they do not have forces to defend themselves. Hope it helps.......

though this event never really happened but..
if cao cao was captured, sun quan will become the most powerful warloard while zhuge liang's boss liu bei will probably go back selling straw shoes  so zhuge liang knew guan yu would let him off and placed him at huang rong. And also, zhugeliang's plan for liu bei in longzhong was to conquer jingzhou and yuzhou then look for a chance to invade wei
