Just found an excellent online EN-CH or CH-EN dictionary used for technical translation:

http://dict.cnki.net

One only need to input the technical terms (in various fields such as science, technology, medicine, social science etc) and it will give the equivalent term in english or chinese. It's a great tool used for translation.

At present I can successfully open it in Beijing, through Firefox or IE. Every time when you refresh the browser interface, the dictionary shows a short phrase in Chinese characters, Pinyin and Arabic. Currently it displays:
新年好
xīn nián hǎo
كل عام و أنتم بخير

Don’t know what the problem you encounter, maybe because of the slow internet access speed across countries, if you’re outside mainland China, I’m not sure.

I'm suprised this website hasn't been mentioned yet, though it's not primary used as a dictionary...really.

But it's YellowBridge.com

This website has character recognition software that allows you to write characters you don't know, and it gives you all the top 15 or so most likely characters you are trying to find. It also has a program that shows you correct stroke order, using Java, of all chinese characters. It has a feature that lets you toggle between Traditional characters and Simplified Characters and it's all free!

I'm telling you that you should check it out, I found it through a friend and I'm shocked that it's free.

For Wu Chinese:

http://wu-chinese.com/minidict (used for figuring out pronunciations only) - Only in simplified Chinese (which makes things even harder) and in an unofficial pinyin (http://wu-chinese.com/romanization), which is even worse since they don't provide IPA.

You input the Chinese simplified character and it'll give you the romanization based on the website's amateurish pinyin, and vice versa.

List of dialects available:

Shanghainese (city) 上海話
Jiading dialect (city) 嘉定話
Suzhou dialect (city) 蘇州話
Wuxi dialect (city 無錫話, also includes pronunciation of older speakers 無錫老派話)
Hangzhou dialect (city) 杭州話
Taizhou dialects (Wenling dialect 溫嶺話 and Linhai dialect 臨海話)
Quzhou dialect (city) 衢州話
Jiangyin dialect (city) 江陰話 and Yuecheng dialect (suburban) 月城話
Changzhou dialect (city) 常州話
Ningbo dialect (city) 寧波話
When I mean city, I don't include suburbs unless otherwise mentioned.

Here's a composite list of all the amateurish pinyin:
http://wu-chinese.co...zation/ext.html For each dialect, but knowledge of Chinese, of course, is required, so it's annoying when they don't provide the IPA for the pinyin.

There's no english-wu chinese though (wish they did), but they do have PDF dictionaries and other stuff in the download section (but only for shanghainese-mandarin-english).

They even have a forum, but the only requirement is Chinese language. (there's no english forum)

http://wu-chinese.com Here's the site, if you'd like to check it out.

There's another one.

http://www.shanghaid...htm/search.aspx
Pretty much explains itself. Shanghainese-Mandarin-English slang dictionary, only covers colloquial words, but it's pretty nice overall. (Includes IPA, which is always a nice perk)

If anything, all Shanghainese pronunciation in IPA is of 中派上海話, the typical pronunciation of Shanghainese speakers, around those from 20-60 years old.
That's all I can find for now, if I find more, I'll update this post. In all Wu Chinese dictionaries, there is this unwritten disclaimer: "Sorry, but 正體字 not included."
