I just wanted to thank Kaiselin and the whole Han Lin Journal team for their time and effort. This past week I used the Hungry Ghost Festival articles in class, so I wanted to give extra thanks to Xng and Moon. Your articles helped to spark a lot of discussion about the H.G.F. and Chinese history in general.

After reading GZ's note in Post #11, I had better add that the reading material which I gave my students included Xng's and Moon's names and the url to the thread containing that issue of the Han Lin Journal, so hopefully I haven't broken any rules or offending anyone.

Thank you from everyone on the staff for the compliment, I am sure that xng will be pleased as well that his article was used to help educate.

Using the article from the HLJ is exactly what we have hoped people reading it would do. It is our ultimate goal, (albeit still a long way off) to have the HLJ recognized as a good source for research and information.

I am thrilled that the articles were able to be used to help spark the discussion. It is so hard to reach students, and if this helped, we have an indication that we are on the right track.

Thanks again!
Kaiselin and all the team of the Han Lin Journal

Firstly I would like to commend and congratulate the CHF Editorial Team! :clapping: I would suggest that if you really wanted to make the CHF Newsletters more scholarly you need to make the newsletter more accessible: perhaps you may need to publish hard copies to acadeimc institutions or make it into a PDF file. I know it is painstakingly tedious but the greater the effort the greater the reward! Also you should consider using more referencing such as footnoting, this will improve its academic reputability. Otherwise keep the great effort up! :jump:

Oops, almost missed your post.... glad I saw it ...

At last some constructive criticism and suggestions!
I am so happy that you took the time to write your thoughts.
They are all good suggestions.

Those are all things that we hope will come with time.. right now we are still in the beginning stages of development. And it must be remembered that everyone on the team are not professionals and only volunteers who are doing the best they can at this project. We have come really far in less then a years time and have many more advances to make.

We need a lot more members to volunteer their advice, time and expertise to this project if it is to succeed, as well as quality articles. I was given this job because I had the time and desire to get it started, but there should be no doubt in anyone's mind that I am a rank amateur at trying to develop an academic journal. I am stepping way out of my box to attempt this project.

It has been a wonderful learning experience. I have been treating this whole project like an independent study college class and now have been putting what I have learned into the new projects I have taken on in my real life, and would never have believed it if you had told me a year ago what I would be doing now.

It is my hope that we will eventually attract members who have the skills needed to take the HLJ to the next level.

We would love to be able to publish hard copies to academic institutions but are nowhere ready for that yet.

One of the things we are trying to figure out now is how we can keep the journal on the top of the new posts for a longer period of time without having to constantly re post an empty nothing post just to re up it to the top.

so far the best way would be if more members would post their comments right to the HLJ. That way it would be activated more frequently so if you missed it on it's publication date, you would still know the new issue was out.

Another subject we are now discussing is whether pseudo names should be allowed.

We are mostly in agreement that in order to have it accepted as an academic journal we should encourage the use of real names, but as of now we do not intend to require them.

As for a PFD document, I have no idea of how to do that, nor do I have the time for anything as time consuming as that is said to be to do.
That does not rule out doing it if someone wants to volunteer the time to do it.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Still just learning to put one foot in front of the other at this time, but soon I hope to be running.

Maybe you don't have to. IIRC, there was a link in large letters to the "Next CHF gathering for Members in Singapore!!" thread at the top of the home page before that event happened.

I tried to do that yesterday but wasn't allowed to do so.

Maybe there is a way around this as well. A separate url could be created for reading and discussing the Han Lin Journal. Or someone could ask an academic journal website to publish the HLJ, The History Cooperative, for example.

Are you referring to the little white box just above the words Imperial Capital on the home page?

I have no idea of how that is activated... always wondered how a thread was picked to go in that...it has all seemed very random.

That would be a possible place to announce that there was a current issue of the Han Lin Journal.
It would be even better if there could be a special box just like that one exclusively for the HLJ and CHF Newsletters. If it could be right there on the top of the Imperial Capital or on the new post page that would be great. That way it could also be a reminder for when the next issues were coming out and the deadlines for submission.

I tried to do that yesterday but wasn't allowed to do so.

Hhmmm, I thought that GZ had changed so everyone could post comments right to the Journal.... guess not. I have been lax in posting the mail box thread for replies because of that. My error, sorry. That would explain why there have been so few comments. duh I will make sure to correct that on all future issues.

A great suggestion, even though I am not sure we are ready for that yet, or am I sure we want to loose complete control of the HLJ, but it is definitely something that I will look into.

I want to thank you again, I need more members to take as active of an interest as you have done. It has been very difficult to come up with all the ideas.
My team has been a great help, but we need to tap the larger brain pool of the CHF's members for their ideas too.

I had not noticed that "latest news" part, but that is a good option. The print size just needs to be bigger. What I remember is that the link directly to the Singapore meeting thread was either just above or below that white box, and it was printed in a very large letter size.

I don't think that you would have to give up any control of the HLJ. That History Cooperative website, from what I saw, just converts academic journals from hard copy to an html format. I was just suggesting that they, or some other similar website, might be willing to re-publish the HLJ to a broader audience. Or, now that I'm thinking more about, you could possibly use Blackwell Publishing to sell HLJ and/or allow the public to view a sample issue similar to what the Journal of Chinese Philosophy is doing.

I sort of remember that banner, but I do not have the access privilege to do that but that is exactly what we need.

This is all stuff that I know nothing about and is extraordinarily exciting, but equally terrifying... I will need a lot of advice and counsel before taking a step like that. I would also need to have more articles lined up for future issues.

At this time I go from issue to issue worrying that we will not have enough quality articles to fill the issue.

For example: at this time I do not have one article from a Han Lin Scholar or a Visiting Scholar lined up for the November issue.

I feel that before we would be ready to actually be published we should have more in the future layouts then that.

Even if we are not ready yet it would be good to discuss our options.

I would really like to hear what other members think of this idea.

I think you guys should adopt a rule in which previously banned members should be instant banned upon creating a new account.
if some one is continuously banned and made a new account, only to take time to re-accumulate their warnings and be banned again, then the warning system is pointless.

however maybe some people do change and have genuinely legitimate interests in history and are willing to become less offensive, and I'm sure CHF is a forgiving forum, perhaps if you guys are feeling in that way, instant bans if a banned person is banned more than twice?

Gee, that would be rather nice, but I certainly don't feel that we are anywhere near the desired standard, and would only embarrass ourselves trying to publish teh HLJ as it is right now. Blackwells do have reasonably high standards.

Hi Chanpuru,

This is an interesting comment and the first time this thread has been used in this manner....you are using this thread as a vehicle as one would in a letter to the editor in a newsletter.

I do not have a problem in overseeing the mail box in such a manner if the members want to use this as a spot to discuss issues such as yours.

I am an administrator, but the Editorial Board is a seperate division of the CHF.
As Chief Editor, I have no say or involvement in the decisions to give warnings or ban a member. My sole duties are to oversee the publishing of the CHF Newsletters and the Han Lin Journal. It is my goal to encourage more scholarly activity within the academic community of the forum. In regards to alerting GZ or Yang as to a possible problem maker I have no more sway then an average member. We all have the responsibility to report a potential problem and do our best to keep the forum a pleasant place to visit.

This is a subject I can not answer, and rather it needs to be addressed to GZ had the other members of the Administration.

They will be able to answer your questions better then me.

I have just read the CHF Newsletter from February 7 2009 and I have enjoyed it very much. Congratulations to editors and authors. Everything is fine. Because of professional bias ( I am a town planner) I especially liked the article on Kaifeng. It reminded me the reading I did long ago of Peonia, the roman by Pearl S. Buck. And it told me many things which I did not know about the city. Thanks all!

Would any CHF members be interested in writing an article on any topic related to China for the June Newsletter?

It would be a great way to get involved in CHF activities and also to see your name in print! You would also be helping the CHF community. Writing an article is not as difficult as you might imagine and it would be greatly appreciated.

Good job, Kaiselin!

Just read my first ever newsletter and enjoyed it. Do you think anyone would be interested in either a book review or a list of China-Centric Fiction?
