"夫君子之行:靜以修身,儉以養德;非淡泊無以明志,非寧靜無以致遠。" - 諸葛亮
One should seek serenity to cultivate the body, thriftiness to cultivate the morals. If you are not simple and frugal, your ambition will not sparkle. If you are not calm and cool, you will not reach far. - Zhugeliang

I voted USA, esp. during the 19-20th century, when Chinese began studying overseas . Alot of chinese, including Sun Yat Sen was influenced by the American Republican thinking and democracy, which gave influence to the founding of Republic of China.
I vote Great Britain, don't forget all the opiums and wars were what started China's westernization.

Generally thinking about the topic, I voted Germany. Reasons:
1. In the last decades of years of Qing, the imperial court decided to learn from Germany, for they found German system of army and society was more practical and effective to be transplanted in Centeria. From the movement of foreign affairs (洋务运动/洋務運動) to the reformation in the Wuxu year (1898, 戊戌变法/戊戌變法), they all followed in the style of german administration/government more or less.
2. Germany has influenced Centeria deeply with it's philosophy as the former Hegelianism and the latter Marxism. Only Nietzsche there were lots of famous Centerian scholars following. As the saying, "Germany always tortures the world with it's philosophy or it's sword." That's true in Centeria.
3. As the only nation playing "the villain of the piece" twice in the two world wars, Germany was paid the high attention to by the nationalists in Centeria, including Mao Zedong (毛泽东/毛澤東) and Jiang Jieshi (蒋介石/蔣介石). During the periods of Anti-Warlords War, Anti-Japanese War and Civil War (as also as "Liberation War" by CCP), there were lots of German brainmen and teachers active in the both opposite sides.
Britain gave Centeria the first western wound, but nothing on this sleeping lion's mind except enmity, I think.I vote Great Britain, don't forget all the opiums and wars were what started China's westernization.

well, America's influenced everyone else, with coke and hamburgers, so I don't think they count...Does anyone know when China began to be influenced by the west? Which western nation has the most profound influence on China?
biggest influence... I'd say... Persia(?) One of those 'west of China' countries. During the Tang, much of their clothing, acrobats, and such was adopted with Silk Road trade, becoming a part of Chinese culture.
