Armour Rattan Suite Sumbawa (Baju Perisai Sumbawa Anyaman Rotan)

Baju Perisai Sumabawa Anyaman Rotan – A very rare example of an armour suite or baju perisai from the eastern islands of Sumbawa (Indonesia).

Made with very interesting materials, the base has two layers of fine rattan weaving, and the outer surface is made of from a kind of seed arranged one atop another, attached to the rattan base with bone.

These warriors seldom wear armor. but they brandish shields for protection.

i pity those people in pics. in fact, they are branded as "uncivilized" by americans back then.
Why? for they are in native attire and lifestyle?
at least they survive in the wild.

Thai movie would be the last place i would go for accurate historical depiction of body armor. A lot of its movies the body shield are heavily drawn from European medieval looks and feel. Just look at this Queen Lansaka for example, reminds me much of Joan of Arc.

For some reason they like to play match game with Roman/European amor to asian stories.

South East army depend more on shield, weapon, and strength(including elaphants, for example, the Khmers are even depicted to using Rinoercerus, this is not too unbelievable as once Chinese source tells us one of the tribute from an early Khmer empire to China was a tamed Rinhocerous of which the Chinese emperor thought was hideuos and scary and did not accept it). They depend on these elements more then on body armour. So body armor for South East asian are light, ranging from vest, jacket, to just bare breasted. South East asia environment is too hot to include all the armors, if the enemy the kill your exhaustion surely will and the jungle were dense before you reach an enemy location.

A 1602 Dutch engraving (entitled “Triumphal procession near the city of Patani”) of the entourage of Patani’s famed Raja Hijau (1584-1616). The Queen rides a decoratively harnessed elephant, accompanied by her maids-in-waiting (and plausibly her sisters, the future Rajas Biru and Ungu) on other elephants. Noblemen accompany the entourage, which has its full complement of Malay palace guards and soldiers in Portuguese-supplied helmets and battle gear. According to the original German and Latin text, two elephants in the vanguard carry armaments in honour of the late King and Raja Hijau’s father, Sultan Bahadur Shah.

A friend of mine had some armor very similar to this. The leather squares were smaller. about an inch and a half by 2 inches.
The leather was corboulie(SP?) Leather dipped in melted wax. That is what gives the leather the nice shine and it hardens up very well.
The chain mail links were about a quarter of an inch ring , maybe 5/16 wire looked like it was not galvanized as it was rusty and the gauge was not a large gauge, maybe 16
