I don't know how to type in Chinese characters, but the Che character is car or cart.

Does anyone have any information about this last name? Oddly enough, my dad doesn't know too much about it... or at least enough to satisfy my curiosity. All he knew was that there perhaps was a prime minister or something like that who was crippled and relied on a cart to get around. I couldn't find anything on the internet, and usually Google brings up info about Che Guevara...

The chinese character for the "Che" surname is 车,which means 'car' or 'cart'.

Historical Origin of the "Che" Surname

There are a few possible historical origin

1. Originated from events. According to records of Yuanhe Xinzhuan 《元和姓纂》, Tian Qianqiu 田千秋 (the prime minister of Han dynasty during Han Wudi's time), being too old, had to ride on a small carriage when leaving the Imperial Court. Because of this, he was called Prime minister of "Che" (i.e. carriage/car/cart). Later, his descendents used the name "Che" as their clan's name, which gradually became a surname.

2. Originated from Northern Nomads who changed their surname. According to Weishu-Gongshizhi 《魏书·官氏志》, one of the Xianbei clans of northern Wei changed their surname from "Chefei 车非" to "Che 车" after entering and occupying central plain China.

3. Originated from Qin aristocrat family (Qin state) during Spring/Autumn period. According to Shiben 《世本》, one of the Qin aristocrats had a "Zi Che" clan (子车氏). Descendents of this clan later used the surname "Che".
