Hi everybody. I just joined up today, I was hoping you could answer a question that I can't seem to find the answer to. There's a style of hat that I think look really cool but I can't find the official name of it. It looks like its just a piece of cloth but its wrapped in a certain way.

Here's a picture : http://kongming.net/...358-Jiang-Wei_A

That style of hat was actually a turban with a ring worn during han/3 kingdoms period. It's known as "Ze 帻". Note that turbans were worn by adults (predominantly by commoners) in ancient China.

The turban representing the lowest rank is known as "Jin 巾", while higher rank turban (with a ring) is known as "Ze 帻"

Ok, this isn't an ancient Chinese hat, but it's from the Qing Dynasty and I think it was worn fairly often. What is it called?

This hat was very common during Qing dynasty. It is known as "Gua Pi Mao 瓜皮帽" (hat cap). It originated from the "6-Sections Cap" (Liuhemao 六合帽) of Ming dynasty, but this cap became popular only during Qing dynasty.

I think the hat the man is wearing is called "Guan 冠" (crown), a typical hat worn by nobles. I'm not sure the period. But my guess is that it's sometime around Age of fragmentation to Sui dynasty. It looks likes murals from Dunhuang. The Lady's hairstyle looks like the hairstyle of Sui dynasty period. So, it could be possibly from Sui dynasty period.

I was going to start my own thread but maybe this is the right place. Does anyone know the names and all the different crowns and headdresses of different dynasties? I saw a headdress with strings of jewels hanging from the back and front. What is this called? did people in tang dynasty wear this or only in the han dynasty? How about the empresses concubines? Did all they wear were head accessories like hairpins and hair sticks or did they also wear crowns?

Wearing the crown started early in the Shang Dynasty. As each dynasty passed, the crown went through lots of changes. Same goes for the empresses and wives of the nobles. The emperor's crown have special meanings.
There will be a detailed article regarding this headdress in the upcoming CHF Newsletter in February. Be sure to check it out when published! It may solve your question. :greetblink:

It looks like some kind of manual of hats. You can see other drawings bleeding through from the other side of the page. I'd love to see the whole book.

Looks like Generals, Officials, and Officers hats.

PM me for my Skype, I removed it from the public's view.

I research stuff I like, I enjoy it as a hobby but one day I plan to get a master's degree in something I enjoy a lot.

Yeah, pretty much court and ritual crowns.

There's a great Hanfu forum here:  http://www.hanfu.hk/...splay.php?fid=6

It's in Chinese so unfortunately I can't read it, but there are many good pictures, and with translation software I can sort of figure out what's being written.

On a related note, can someone please translate the names of these crowns? I recognize the "guan" (crown) character, but don't know the others.
