Hi all, does anyone know if a plain red flag had any particular symbolism in post Qing China. The period up until 930 at least. My immediate thoughts tend to think it may be associated with the communists but I don't know.

That a red flag symbolises communism came from Europe. In ancient China, it was possible for rebels to use any kind of monocolour flag or scarf banners which were easy to produce at that time.

It is just a coincedence, but it is interesting to note that red flags may have been popular during the Han Dynasty as well. This is because according to the Five Phases theory, the Han was associated with the Phase Fire and the colour red. As a poem from Three Kingdoms states:

"The Fiery-Red Flag, toured the Realm of Han".
