I came across a quotation given as from the "尚書百釈" concerning a court ritual or festival. It was quoted in 860, so it probably is from the period of this forum. Does anyone know anything about it, especially its date? Thank you.

a check from the Internet says that this is a commentary on the "Book of Documents" 尚書 written by Chao Yi 巢 猗, an economist and scholar who lived during Sui times.

the book seemed to have been quoted in 舊唐書

hope that helps

It does help. He seems to be discussing when to celebrate the 朔旦冬至 festival after calendar changes messed up the old method of determining the date, so he is probably commenting on a place in the 尚書 that discusses the festival. Thank you.

I googled on "尚書百釈" with no success; I wonder where I went wrong.

I think you mean 《尚书百释》, 釈 is Japanese character. 释 is Chinese character.
《尚书百释》三卷(3 volume) 梁(dynasty Liang) 国子助教(assistant professor of national university) 巢徛(Chao Ji) 撰.

dynasty Liang AD 502-557

Even you google 尚书百释, i'm afraid you can not find something about the content of this book. It's just a name in the book list in the history book.

That is very helpful. What I needed to know is which dynasty the book was from--that told me which calendar he was dealing with.
I have come across three versions of his name: 巢徛, 巢 猗, and 巢椅. I suppose somewhere along the line there was miscopying.
