???

I do not understand this. What again is the justification / excuse for Muslims to deny other religious communities the same right for building worshipping places they do claim in non-muslim countries?

Mosque In Kelantan (Malaysia) & Pattani (Thailand)

Great Mosque Kota Bharu

Posted Image

A rare photo of a now non-existent Masjid Besar Kota Bharu, said to be taken shortly before the demolition work around 1940s.
The concrete minaret, as can be seen to the right of the photo is in fact one of the existing parts of the present day Masjid Muhammadi.
A brick mosque was built in 1920s beside the existing old wooden mosque to support the daily religious services, but only around 1940s the wooden Mosque was finally torn down to give way to the new mosque expansion and upgrading work.
A local heritage that was lost to the advancing of Western ideas of modernisation.

Judging from the old photo of the long gone Masjid Besar Kota Bharu,
it is interesting to realise that how much it resembles this 400 years old Masjid Telok Manok or Masjid Wadi Al Hussain
in Telok Manok, in Pattani, Southern Thailand.
A very old mosque, remnant from the glorious era of the once famous Islamic Malay Kingdom of Pattani.
Luckily, the Masjid Telok Manok is still exist and obviously in good shape.
By looking at this living example of old Malay architecture,
perhaps one could get an idea on how the demolished Masjid Besar Kota Bharu

A rare shot of Masjid Kampung Laut at its original site in Kampung Laut, Tumpat, Kelantan.
This photo, said to be taken in 1960s,
shows the condition of the oldest mosque in Malaysia, before the great flood that almost erased it completely from existence.
Note that there was a graveyard by the mosque, probably as old as the structure itself.
If you go to Kampung Laut nowadays and pay a visit to the former, now submerged site of Masjid Kampung Laut, you will notice that only a small plot of the old graveyard still remains
as large part of it had long gone with the merciless flow of the Kelantan river.

The mosque in Hanoi is known as 'Indian pagoda'. Its Arabic name is Al-Noor masjid.

It was built in 1890 and renovated in 1950 (see pictures).

Its address is 12 Hang Luoc street, Kim Ma commune, Hoan Kiem dis., Hanoi.

This masjid has Indian architecture and used mainly by Muslims from overseas. The Imams of this masjid are the Afghani-Arabic teachers from Al-Fath Islamic primary school close by.

Muslims in Hanoi are mainly the Embassy workers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Palestine, Iran, Iraq and so forth. It is possible that they make up over 90% of Muslims in Hanoi.

As for the Vietnamese Muslims themselves, most of them live near the masjid. There are about 3 Muslim families whose grandfather is a Pakistani, one couple consists of Vietnamese and Bangladeshi, one old revert, one young revert. At the moment there are about 15 of us.

The top addition to the roof of these Mosques is very interesting. They look a bit top heavy and structurally unsound, but the uniqueness of the design sets them apart from anything I have ever seen before.
I wonder why this particular design developed as it does not seem to follow the norm and yet it has kept the far eastern feel.

I have only seen pictures of Mosques in the Middle East before, so I have enjoyed seeing how the Mosques have evolved to fit the native cultures architecture as well as retaining the qualities of a Mosque.
I am also struck by the simplicity of the design of all the buildings. The ornate geometric designs that we normally associate with Mosques is almost totally missing, and the arch, seems to be the main connection to Mideastern style.[which seems to be totally missing from this Mosque pictured here]

I can not remember the name for the arch, but I do remember that it is representative of the gate way of sorts, a portal thru which you focus your prayers.

As I looked at the pictures of the West Shanghai Mosque, I have to agree that the architect Xiao-an Wang
simplified to the point of almost complete lose to any relation to Chinese architecture what so ever.
What little connection to eastern style there is seems to be the stark simplicity of Japanese style, skipping over Chinese style altogether.
In the picture of inside the main room, [forgive me, I don't know the terminology with in Mosques, sorry]

Posted Image

you can see windows or screens that have a bit of an Asian touch as seen by maybe as a modern Frank Lloyd Wright inspired architect might have added some concessions to Asian style.
What a shame that Xiao-an Wang did not take the speakers in to consideration when designing the room, They are a real distraction to the overall affect.
Never the less, I really like the Mosques design.
I like the picture that was taken from the tiny structure of arches looking up to the main peak on the dome.

Posted Image

It took me a while to locate where that picture was taken. Very nicely done.
