I found this great map of the Tang dynasty in Perspectives on the T'ang by Denis Twitchett et al. It was so great I copied it and then scanned it into my computer. As you can see, it even shows the post roads. It doesn't include the western regrions, unfortunately. The information is the same as the map in The Cambridge History of China, but this one is better quality.

It is very good, thank you. I particularly like the demographic information.

I can see that it was divided into prefectures 州, especially since Ningbo and Zhoushan were one prefecture called Mingzhou (明州), or how Shaoxing used to be called Yuezhou (越州).

Reading Wade-Giles Romanization makes my head hurt, to be honest here. Would rather read Hanyu Pinyin romanization instead (it would help if there were Chinese characters identify the 'X-zhou'). :wallbash:

It came from an English-language book published in the 70s, I think, back when Wade-Giles was the romanization used. I hate Wade-Giles too, but after reading so many older books and articles, I more or less know it. Still, it's the best English-language Tang dynasty map I have found so far. I'm hoping in the future to modify this map, making the individual circuits different colors so the map will be easier to read.
