Can anyone help to translate my baby boy chinese name : 星懿 to english hokkien? thanks you


星懿 should be "sing i" in Hokkien. If you're using Singaporean Hokkien romanization, it should be "seng ee"

星 can also be pronounced as "san", "tshenn", "tschinn" in Hokkien.

星懿 should be "sing i" in Hokkien. If you're using Singaporean Hokkien romanization, it should be "seng ee"

Actually, the best romanization for 懿 in Hokkien is "i", since that's how it's pronounced. This is used in POJ (Peh Oe Ji) or Tai-lo Hokkien romanization used in Taiwan.

In Hokkien language, there is no intial "y". So, you cannot romanize it as "yi".

However, in typical Singaporean Hokkien romanization, 懿 is often romanized as "ee".

In Hokkien language, there is no intial "y". So, you cannot romanize it as "yi".

Though people often use "y" to represent things like "iong" (becoming "Yong").
And this "yi" appear to match "Southeast Asian Mandarin" pronunciations.

Most likely people will romanize 懿 as 'yi' rather than 'ee', but of course some romanize it as 'ee'

You have to be careful when using that, as the Romanization systems are not compatible with the ones actually in use in Singapore.
