we are talking about the time of the Russian Japanese war. Russia was already wanting to expand deeper into East Asia. They would have taken Korea if the Japanese did not take it.
http://www.thecorner...n-expansion.htm

Another question would be, What if Russia colonized Korea instead of Japan?

typical Japanese answer, did you know Korea had better relationship with Russia than other colonial powers?
Queen Min and her husband had a deal with Russia to modernize Korea with Russian just before she was assassinated by Japanese and King fled to Russian embassy to save himself. Thanks to Russian eye witness accounts, we have detailed records on how Queen Min was murdered by Japanese.
Russia would have made Korea as their ally to destroy Japan, and this scared Japanese.

Konichiwa!! So stating the facts makes it a typical Japanese answer? Does this mean you think Japanese people always tell the truth? :)

here's some real proof, read page 456 of this book
http://books.google.... joseon&f=false

Prime Minister Kim Hong Jip, in the 1890s, who wrote A Policy for Joseon, advised that Russia was the biggest threat to Joseon, not Japan because of Russia's rapid expansion into Asia. Also for Joseon to seek an alliance with China and even Japan to stop Russia. And yes, Emperor Gojong of Korea followed it. Too bad that one of the potential allies acted before Russia did in attacking Japan.

so there's some facts for you. don't forget to say Domo Arigoto!

According to Don Oberdorfer's book "The Two Koreas", the Russians had originally wanted to divide the Korean peninsula between themselves and the Japanese. Coincidently the line of division is the same one that is later used to divide North and South Korea. The tensions between Japan and Russia eventually led to the Russian-Japanese war of 1905. I'm sorry after going back through the book I had it reversed.

I've added this in an edit.

Here's how it was as described by Don Oberdorfer:

The Russians were indeed aggressively expansioning into Asia. According to the book Russian foreign minister, Count Vladimir Lamsdorff wrote,"Korea's destiny as a component part of the Russian empire, on geographical and political grounds, had been foreordained for us to fulfill." So it is apparent that the Russian empire planned to gobble up Korea. However, because the Russian empire was also a major competitor to Britain's interests, the Japanese then worked out an alliance between itself and Britain for the purpose of containing the Russian empire's influence in the Far East in 1902. Once the Russian empire sensed weakness in the Chinese empire they began moving troops into the Korean peninsula, which led to clashes with the Japanese. The Japanese then proposed that the Korean peninsula be divided between them and the Russians. The Russians would not accept, and thus it led to the war between Japan and Russia in 1905.

Well, then Russia wasn't so different from Japan was it?
How's Japan any better than Russia when Japan killed and kidnapped Koreans?
At that time of 19th century, Korea was under Korean control you fool of course Russia was perceived bigger threat, Korea and Qing even fought Russian together, you're the one need to read more books.

um that's the point. did you not read my question?

that's not what you said.

Because you are not familiar.. Queen Min is the wife of King Gojong. King Gojong, as you read in that published book, was scared over the Russian threat.

Thus no need for you to resort to name calling every time you were proven conclusively wrong.

gentlemen two things I need to remind you.
1. No personal attacks on each other! Its fine to disagree but lets not insult each other because of that
2. This is a thread on Perry and Korea, not Russia and Korea. You can feel free to open another thread on that (but if you guys do, I would prefer that it be civil).
