I'm originally from Iowa, USA. I spent about 9 months on an exchange program to Taizhong, Taiwan in high school, and spent another 2 months on mainland China in Tianjin. I used to just like the modern, pop culture aspect to China, but I became interested in Chinese history after taking an undergraduate class on it. I'm just here saying hi right - I'm not sure yet if I'll become a full member, but these fora do look interesting.

So do any other Iowans frequent CHF?

Welcome to CHF!

Since you like Chinese pop culture, have you explored Taiwanese pop culture? Taiwan is the leader in Mandopop and if you ever like it, you should try to explore that area.

Mainland Chinese pop culture started from Shanghai in the 1930s, but its Chinese pop development shifted to Taiwan after 1949, only to spread it back to mainland China in the 1980s from Taiwan.

I'm aware of Mandopop, but I'm much more interested in Taiwan's indie rock scene and Mainland China's rock scene after the 1980's (starting with Cuī Jiàn). There have been interesting developments in Mandopop (and there are some pretty good artists - I'm a big fan of Wáng Lì Hóng among others) but, at least to me, pop seems to be more of a bland form of music than any other. There doesn't seem to be another genre whose sounds are as the same in every country around the world, and is as closely tied to large media corporations as pop. I would still argue that Mandopop is more original than pop in other regions, and it's definitely good to learn the history and trends of Mandopop, as it has a huge relation to other forms of Chinese music (and even Chinese culture itself), but personally rock just seems much more interesting.

I could probably talk about pop culture all day, but I'd really love to learn more about ancient China. One of my favorite periods to study was the Song. I saw your thread here about historical dramas, and it may be interesting to watch some of them. I'll also probably want to watch the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, since it seems to be one of the better historical TV dramas.

Wow.. I didn't know you're quite knowledgeable in Chinese pop culture. We do have a forum for modern Chinese culture called Chinese entertainment culture at
http://www.chinahist...inment-culture/ . It includes C-pop discussion as well as Chinese movies etc. If you're interested in Chinese pop and rock, maybe you can tell us more about it.

The forum is separated from a subforum focusing on traditional Chinese entertainment culture: http://www.chinahist...-entertainment/

Of course, the bulk of CHF focuses on Ancient stuff and we do have a rich amount of information on that. So take your time to browse through the forum and get to learn more about it.
