I have been trying to study this from every which angle I could come up with for the last several years and have gotten nowehere.

Okay, sure, I can tell the difference between a Han Dynasty jian (usually, anyway, because most are not steel) from the rest or a Tang Dynasty from the others (except for steel Han Jian) because of the guard at the top of the grip.

But I can't figure it out beyond that. What differentiates a Ming Dynasty Jian from a Qing? Or a Qin from a Song? Is there a design the Yuan Dynasty used predominantly (I haven't even been able to get that much)?

Does anyone have any help for me? English sources only, please, if you are going to direct me somewhere. I can't read any other language.

Thank you.
