Hi,

I am looking for further information on the Singapore Volunteer Corps

The force was first known as Singapore Volunteer Rifle Corps formed in the late 1854 after an outbreak of rioting between rival Chinese secret societies. The corps can be considered as a private army as it was funded privately.

It was disbanded at the end of 1887 and was reformed as the Singapore Volunteer Artillery in 1888.

In 1901, it was renamed as Singapore Volunteer Corps.

In 1922, the corps was absorbed into the Straits Settlements Volunteer Force (SSVF) which included the forces from Malacca and Penang.

1954, SSVF was disbanded and absorbed into the Singapore Military Force as Singapore Volunteer Corps.

1965, People's Defence Force (PDF) created to replace SVC

1971, PDF was reorganized and trained as NSF operational BNs

101 PDF, the last truly volunteer battalion was finally disbanded in 1984 as less attention and resources were allocate to it.

In 1985, PDF was reorganized into 1 PDF and 2 PDF

* Information taken from Singapore Infopedia

Anyone have more info about SVC/PDF?
