He wrote a book called Vietnam springhead of eastern asian civilization
Its quite fascinating and explains how china is a derivation of vietnam.
as I recall both countries are vastly different.

I have the fortune of living in the part of the world which has use for toilet paper, but not douches.

I remember my own thoughts about it. The theory is pretty unbelievable and yet if you take a look at the earlier more successful neolithic civilizations in China it didn't happen right at where you would think it would happen. It happened elsewhere like at the flood silt deposit areas of the Yangzi and Yellow rivers creating the Liangzhu and Dawenkou cultures. These areas even had proto writing on their pottery it seemed. Certainly a lot of the ideas worked their way into the interior of China to create the giants like Shang and Zhou in later eras because the ingenuity of the forms and domestic items of areas outside Shang and Zhou control carried right through to the forms and domestic items used by their royalty! So it begs the question did Liangzhu and Dawenkou have anything to do with the politial situation at the onset of what we would call historical China and the answer seems to be yes!
