Hi all,

We have named our son in Hanyu Pinyin, but was wondering what it'd be in Hokkien? His name is 林 晨 (Lin Chen).

We were told that the first character would be 'Lim' in hokkien, but for 'Chen 晨 ' is quite unsure.

Can anyone please help me out with the translation? Thanks a lot.

Your uncle is wrong.

Sin and Sing sound similar and is hard to distinguish for non linguistic expert.

As a rule, if there is no 'ng' ending in Mandarin sound, then there are also no 'ng' ending in most other chinese dialects.

case 1: 'n' ending

晨 - Chen (mandarin), San (cantonese), Sin (hokkien)
陳 - Chen (mandarin), Chan (cantonese), Tan (hokkien), Chin (hakka)

case 2: 'ng' ending

冷 - Leng (mandarin), Lang (cantonese), Ling (hokkien)
