I've got "Get Ahead In Chinese".
It very good book at elementary stage for teenagers. I strongly recommend it.

The hardest thing in mandarin is the tones, which for me is impossible to learn via a book. The grammar in chinese is fairly easy to understand and use and the vocab isn't that hard to pick up with flashcards and such.

I am currently using the My chinese classroom series. I have read tons of Mandarin learning books but at the end of the day a book is a book. I think trying to learn mandarin requires a more practical approach. You must be practicing with a native speak.

I am surprised that noone in this thread has yet recommended the "Assimil" series for beginners learning (Mandarin) Chinese. I have been using "Assimil Chinese With Ease" for the past month or so, it is an excellent resource with a bilingual (English - Pinyin & Hanzi)text and all-Chinese audio. I find it much more useful than the Teach Yourself Series, simply because it has much more content and there is no useless English in the accompanying audio. I would highly recommend this as a relatively inexpensive starting point for any beginner who wished to learn Mandarin Chinese. Unfortunately I don't believe this series covers any of the other dialects, however.
