I don't think it's possible for their to be a best art, only different approaches. With experience anyone will come to know what is effective and what is not.

Kung fu is not a martial art. It's a broad genre referring to Martial arts from China.
Please tell us WHY you think that the Martial Arts are greater- if you think they're greater because they're Chinese, that's still not very valid.
I do think Tai Chi is great, for its sheer destructive capabilities and cancellation of an opponent...
But Shaolin, IMO, is not the greatest art. It's far from what it's made out to be. Nowhere near greatest.

There are other schools of the neijia martial arts like Taijiquan whose proponents will argue are much better than Taijiquan. The thing is we can sit here and debate which martial arts is the best, but by which yardstick are we using? Are there international competitions in this area? And if so, who are the winners?

If you pick 2 young persons train them today in say Taijiquan and Hongquan, the guy learning Hongquan will kick the butt of the guy learning Taijiquan after 2 years. Taijiquan has a longer learning curve to reach a level mastery capable of defeating the others. Martial arts also sometimes evolve as a form of Scissors-Paper-Stone, so its really done to the skill or Gongfu of the person.

A lot of martial arts have been refined over the years and properly applied, all are deadly and effective. You are not 'better' simply by using a particular form.

For pure brutalness my vote goes to Xingyi Quan followed by Bajiquan. Their focus on explosive force and Kao-fa 靠法 makes them pretty deadly in a short amount of time.

I agree however that some forms have evolved to the point where their martial applications is diluted in favour of aesthetic moves such as Changquan.

Mhmm, that Kaofa hurts alot.
I like Xingyi and Baguazhang too..looks dangerous, though my teacher is best skilled in Taiji.

I should say that unlike you, all my knowledge of martial arts is theoretical! I really like chinese martial arts but unfortunately am too lazy to learn it.

BTW, that might be a misunderstanding, I meant Bajiquan not Baguazhang, both are quite different. Having said that Baguazhang can be most deadly as well and there are many well-known masters of it!

To be fair it is difficult to learn Xingyi Quan or Bajiquan unless you start young or have a good base from another related martial arts, its very easy to hurt oneself learning these martial arts.

Which school of Taijiquan are you learning?

Systems don't make the person. It's the person that makes the system.

Actually the best Martial art of each period is that of the victor of that period or the dominant power. This will be comprised of fluidity and innovation. Those that pursue the ancient arts as well as real combat arts fully understand the ever changing battlefield and the applications of force to control that battlefield know that real Martials arts never stops evolving. As to the question of the best "ancient art" in relation to hand to hand combat I would submit that Praying Mantis, Baji Quan, and Bagua Zhang have all been reputed as systems used for killing or maiming exclusively and therefore stand out above many other systems that have non lethal techniques.

That really depends on the opponent, fks using high kicks against a western trained proffesional boxer is a sure way to send you to the hospital, but one using low kicks would have a really good chance.
Or if your opponent is a Muay Thai specialist of the old school (No rules) then i would say *Fall down on you knees and hope that you are faster*, or Turkish wrestler *Keep him away from me* and hope you can knock him out before he get a hold on you (High kicks can be good here) and finisheds the job on you to the cracks and pops of you limbs being forcefully dislocatet,
Or multiple opponents theres more than one fks.

1) Way of the hare *If they cant catch you they cant hurt you*

2) Way of the diplomat *My blood would really dirty you clothes so if you get what i have can't you please let me go*

3) Way of persuasion *My sawed off shot gun says you will turn around and hop away clucking like chicken*

4) Way of infamy * Ohhh that is so cute, that reminds me of when i was younger before they unjustly locked me away in that institute for the crimminaly insane *

Have fun :arrogant^:
My motto would be 'Truth will out, but no truth is absolute'.
We all should look for the truth, no matter how painful or obnoxious it might be. but we always have to keep in mind that any truth we find will be coloured by both our self as well as those that createt it. an absolute truth is always impossible to reach since we as species by nature is falible. the greatest danger is when we convinces our self that the truth we know is the only truth that counts.

Worth remembering that truth is not the same as law of reality. IE the law of gravity no matter how it is describet is always as law that counts, likewise all other natural laws, it is only our incomplete grasp of them that can make them seem inconsistent or untruthfull.

40K - where the genocidal, xenocidal, fascist, ultraconservative zealots with a morbid fear of technology and an unhealthy fondness for burning things... are the good guys.
