Please contribute to the list. I would start with "A" :

Anote Tong
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Anote Tong (in Chinese, 湯安諾; pinyin: Tāng Ānnuò — his family name is of Chinese origin but it is now considered as Gilbertese by Kiribati people) (born 1952) is the president of Kiribati. He won the election in July 2003 with a slim majority (47.4%) against his brother, Dr. Harry Tong (43.5%) and the private lawyer Banuera Berina (9.1%). The elections were contested by the opposition, due to allegations of electoral fraud but the High Court of Tarawa had confirmed that there was no fraud.

The son of a Chinese migrant who settled in the Gilberts after World War II and of a Gilbertese woman, he graduated from the London School of Economics.

During the campaign, he promised to review the lease of a spy and satellite tracking base used by the People's Republic of China and "to take appropriate actions at the right time." On November 7, he established relations with the Republic of China on Taiwan, which led the People's Republic of China to sever relations and vacate its satellite base nearly a month later.

Comment : it is pretty amazing that the Tang brothers dominate the politics in
Kiribati.

Adrienne Clarkson

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Louise Clarkson, CC, CMM, COM, CD (born 10 February 1939) is the current Governor General of Canada. She has held this position since 1999. Her Excellency is the first Chinese Canadian and second woman to hold this position, the first being Jeanne Sauvé.

A Hakka born (as Chinese: 伍冰枝; pinyin: Wǔ Bīngzhī, Hakka: Ńg Pên-kî) in Hong Kong to William and Ethel Poy (伍英才 Pinyin: Wǔ Yīngcái), but raised in Ontario, Clarkson's ancestry is from Taishan, Guangdong, China. Since her father was a British subject, he was a part of a prisoner-of-war exchange with the Japanese Imperial Forces. Her family subsequently came to Canada, using the "special circumstances" clause in the Chinese Immigration Act of 1923 that allowed Chinese into Canada during the Second World War in 1942.

Gary Locke

Gary Locke (born 21 January 1950 in Seattle, Washington) was the governor of Washington (1997-2005), and the first Chinese American governor in the United States. His Chinese name is 駱家輝 (Cantonese jyutping: Lok3 Gaa1 Fai1, Mandarin pinyin: Luò Jiāhuī). He is a Democrat.

They're both now deposed... I mean retired, though.

Just annecdotal observation. Most American Born Chinese, Canadiene Born Chinese and Mainland Chinese immigrants are Anti-China. Consequently,I don't know if it's appropiate to call them Overseas Chinese and "Chinese"politician since that denotes a certain Nationality and given the fact that they are hostile to China and distance themselves from the Chinese heritage. But many seem to go thru the practice of ritual traditions and superstitions of southern China culture, but not having the heart or spirit of being Chinese.

She chairs the Select Committee on Hate Crimes, is a member of the Select Committee on Language Access, and also serves as a member of the Assembly committees on Rules, Labor and Employment, Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials, Human Services, and Transportation. Prior to serving in the State Assembly, she served on the Monterey Park City Council for thirteen years starting from 1988 to 2001, and served as Mayor of the city three times.

Dr. Chu has been dedicated to education throughout her career. She started her career in public service as a board member of the Garvey School District from 1985 to 1988. Dr. Chu has carried legislation in a wide variety of areas. Her hate crimes bills improve the prosecution of hate crimes, prohibit the insertion of hate flyers in free publications, and create an anti-bias youth program. She successfully carried legislation to increase training for acupuncturists. She has helped the elderly and disabled by allowing the vans that carry them to use carpool lanes. Her bills also work to improve operations of domestic violence courts and establish best practice models for campus sexual assault programs. She carried a bill to establish an environmental justice small grant program to help low income and minority communities combat the effects of pollution. She has also helped small businesses through a bill that improves the competitive bid process for emergency work done by Cal Trans.

Dr. Chu was named by California Journal as one of California's top new legislators. She has received a 100% rating by the Children's Advocacy Institute, the Congress of California Seniors, the Better Business Alliance and the California League of Conservation Voters. She was given the Legislative Hero Award by the California Primary Care Association. She was also awarded the Public Service Award by the UCLA Alumni Association for her work in addressing the ethnic shift in Monterey Park and for promoting diversity by founding Monterey Park's annual Harmony Month.

Dr. Chu is married to Michael Eng, a noted community leader and attorney in the Los Angeles area.

Overseas Chinese here refers to the 华侨 Huaqiao or 华裔 Huayi. It does not mean they still see themselves as Chinese Nationals, merely Chinese as an ethnicity. As for having the heart and spirit of being Chinese (the ethnicity) arguably you get more of that in places outside of mainland China like Taiwan or even Singapore.

His public rating diminished sharply near the end of his second term, due to his support for RepubliKKKan policies despite being a DemocRat. (Not surprising, since Washington is chokeful of tree-huggers... and trees.)

Also, he's fostered good relations with China (based more on the colour of his skin, methinks, than his law degree) so he's going to go into business. He makes $120k as guv. He can make much more dealing with China.

Also, he does not want to destroy US's first ever governor-senator-senator all female combo.

^It is very rare to see an Asian man make it so far in US politics. Usually, here you only see Asian women politicians and most are married to white men and oblivious to Chinese and Asian-American concerns and issues.

Other than Gary Locke, the only 3 other Asian American male politicians I know are:

1) Michael Woo- a Democrat and served successful terms on the LA City Council. After his 1994 defeat in mayoral elections, he no longer is in politics.

2) Matt Fong- a Republican. He served as California state treasurer. Despite him being Republican, many whites didn't really trusted a Chinese politician.

3) Mayor Chang of Cupertino (near San Francisco). He is the Asian politician I admire most. He is in a lot of political heat right now because of his righteous policies. He tried to name some streets and buildings after famous Asian-Americans and the whites tried to remove him from power. Other honorable deeds he did were making sure that Asian male candidates filled his staff and got their chance. He has on many occasions vetoed city projects and ads if it did not included Asian men. That is why he is getting heat and lynched by the white establishment. Mayor Chang is a hero to me forever.

Part 2 Biography-Minister Era
Kwik Kian Gie

Executive with an observer's soul.

His economic Analysis is always sharp. Minister with an observer's soul; he began his career as manager and entrepreneur. But he is more suitable to be an observer.
His activity in R&D of PDIP had gained him the cabinet posts of Coordinating Minister of Economy under Abdurrahman Wahid's government and National Development Planning Minister under Megawati's government. But, he again showed us his nature of an observer.

He still wrote for daily newspaper KOMPAS, even he was an executive, decision maker and minister. He often aired his different opion against government decision.
He often aired popular opinion as an observer, despite being an executive.

As a result economic team in Gotong-Royong (working together) cabinet which once called "The Dream Team" had an image of chaos. There was no coordination. Some said that coordinating minister for economy, monetary and industry Dorodjatun Kuntjoro Jakti was not able to lead his team. On the other hand some told Kwik to resign, back to be an observer.

The rumble of this economic team was used by other politicians and activists to show the weakness of President Megawati leadership. Some used it as a reason to propose for reshuffling of the cabinet as soon as possible.

But Megawati learned from Gus Dur experience, not to change her ministers so quickly. So Kwik was saved.
Kwik was forced to resign by President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur). He was forced to resign after he was made frustrated, he wrote in Suara Pembaruan daily newspaper, Friday 11th August 2000. A source "Mr. Kwik often was frustrated because of the ministers that willing to go to the coordination meeting." They also thought that Kwik was more suitabe as an observer than a executive, decision maker.
The same case almost happened again if Kwik were not a PDIP cadre and if President Megawati obeyed the will of other politicians and observers.
"A country that does not respect history has no future."

I am not impressed at all with Matt Fong, I read about him about 7 years ago. I think he did not represent Asian American.

From your writing, I am deeply impressed of former Mayor Michael Chang.
I think he should move to Asian dominated city like San Jose and take another mayorship there. Is it possible ?
Edit : BTW, is he still mayor now ? Because I found another website, but the last update was 2004. Need confirmation.
http://www.apaics.or...ess_fellow.html

Edit 2nd: How about other Asian politicians stated there on the website?
Some of them have Chinese sounded surname.

1) Michael Woo- a Democrat and served successful terms on the LA City Council.  After his 1994 defeat in mayoral elections, he no longer is in politics.

mike woo was too ambitious and impatient.

he was a popular councilman representing Highland Park district of LA; but he gave up his office to run for major of LA, which he eventually lost to Riodon.

He now is a lecturer in Urban Planning---a field in which he holds a MA from UC Berkeley---at USC. He runs the Beijing Lab---an Urban Planning think tank---at USC.

2) Matt Fong- a Republican.  He served as California state treasurer.  Despite him being Republican, many whites didn't really trusted a Chinese politician.

Matt Fong's mother is Marge Fong Eu, who was the first Chinese to hold Calif state office. she was a arch Democrate and was State Secretary for several terms. Matt started out as a Democrat, then switched political party.
