Are there any pictures of KMT's female soldiers? My mother was one of them (there were supposed to be a lot of them at the time), but she does not have any old pictures from that time -- too poor to afford cameras!!! It would be interesting to see some pictures of them instead of just those well dressed KMT male soldiers!!! You do know that the majority of the KMT soldiers were NOT as well dressed and well equipped like those soldiers in these photos, right? Actually, that was what my Taiwanese friends told me from their first impressions of KMT's soldiers from mainland China. In addition, that was also what my mother and my mother's friends told me about their experiences as well -- They were under the command of Chen Cheng, who was Chiang Kai-shek's key person in Zhejiang & nearby areas.

just what kind of helmet is that????

American football???

Water Melon????

I am not an expert on the subject, but it is very similar to many armoured helmets. The absence of webbing, backpack, or a rifle would seem to suggest this is so.

The straw hats worn with the field caps by the female soldiers in the back seem to indicate that they are a southern army unit. I know the Cantonese 19th Route Army have the same style 'coolie'-hat strapped across their backs during the 1932 Shanghai battle. That and umbrellas seem to be popular among Chinese armies from Qing-Republic.

Anyone have any pics of the 19th Route btw? :notworthy:

Only 8 infantry divisions were equipped with German weapons. I think they were all sent to Shanghai. I read about battle of Shanghai and Chinese troops were about 200,000 soldiers. NRA lacked armoured vehicle, air cover (close air support), navy, altillery. You needed combined arms to win a frontal battle even at that time. Japanese Kwangtung Army was better equipped, trained and supported (from sea and air).

Yes, they were sent to the Battle of Shanghai. There remains of the division were noted for their defense of the Sihang Warehouse, near the end of the battle. This is also where the noted "800 heroes" came from, being members of those divisions.

Maybe the Germans were only willing to sell them as a package XD

Imagine the German's plight, when they have 200,000 army clothes without a helmet XD

As Babyblue noted, everything was locally made, including the ammunitions, uniforms, weapons, grenades, everything. There were many noted arsenals, and factories during the war that produced these, including the: Kunghsien Arsenal, Hanyang Arsenal, Jinglin Arsenal, and Canton Arsenal. Chinese copies of german weapons were also frequently used.

at first they wear german, then british, and american. i like their uniforms, specially the german ones, but i think chiang kai shek's son, also a ROC soldier, carries a rank in the german army.

His second son (some say adopted, some say illegitimate) Chiang Wei Kuo served in the Wehrmacht after being sent to Germany by Chiang Kai Shek for training. He participated as part of a tank crew during the Austrian Anschluss. He was promoted to Leutenant prior to being recalled back to China for the war there, and continuing to move up the ranks. His brother on the other hand (the legitimate first son) was sent to Russia for education under Stalin.
