***hmmm, Hira, can you think of a time that when somoene says 'no offense', somebody didn't get offended?

That's exactly the point :D One just tries to cover one's back with that kind of expressions. Kinda "I'm not taking responsibility in you being offended". Not that it actually works, but one tends to insert that kind of phrases almost automatically. Just manners.

Thank you. Nice of you to say so.

That's the apotheosis of your stereotypicalness. I mean you're stereotypical in the sense that you expressed the typical leftist position on multiculturalism and eurocentrism as if it was written in a textbook. No second-thoughts, no nuances, no personal experiences, not a single 'doubt' whatsoever; it looked more like a generalization of the leftist position made by a rightist critic than a real leftist thinking.
And that "nice of you to say so" is also a typical example of leftist selfrighteousness and intellectual pride.
You should become a professor.

But anyway, this could become a full-fledged (and yet again typical) left-right political discussion, so I think it'll be better to leave it that way. The topic in discussion here is another.

Well, why is your 'no offense' simply good manners, yet my 'thank you, nice of you to say so' is leftist self righteousness and intellectual pride?
I can't begin to defend against being called a sterotypical leftist, rightist critic, or someone devoid of nuance or personal experience. Left-right political discussions are archaic, post-industrial and irrelevent as well as being simplistic.
As for being on topic; your tone is responsive to the topic, despite the smiley faces. How many times can one be called 'typical' in one post and not take offense?
I wouldn't want to be a professor because it would mean putting up with petulant passive-aggressive students.

Actually its not manners, more of a figure of speech. If you really didnt want to cause offense, dont say it.

I think, this topic is getting too much into "politics" discussion rather than on our initial discussion.

Anyway, just note that CHF remains alot more friendlier than other larger forums where open hostilities are more common..

I'm closing down this thread.
