As you may well know, my name is modelled after Zhao Yun, and I'm a fan of Zhao Yun....

I came to know Zhao Yun after playing RTK games...regarding martial arts, I think, he was of equal match to Guan Yu or ZhangFei

I thought Zhao Yun at least surpass ZhangFei, because Zhao Yun also had the brains. If you are a game player you should know this.

It took brains to force Cao Cao's cavalry to halt at Chang Ban, taking the south of Shu was not simple but he used Yan Yan well and he managed to ambush Zhang He. Zhang Fei was probably Shu's best general in his life time, other then Liu Bei. He was smart, he was said to be strong but he was too harsh on his men. I understand you not liking him but he was more then just strength.

My own view on Zhao Yun is that he showed he was smart and showed talent as a general late on in his life, I do wonder why he only emerged as such late on though. Maybe a good all rounder, a jack of all trades but master at none?

Zhao Yun was never a major commander in Shu's camp. My view is that he was same as Maeda in Oda's camp in Sengoku. He had been following Liu Bei for a long time but we never see any thing major from him. Even Huang Zhong defeated Xia Hou Yuan, but Zhao Yun had nothing.

About Zhao Yun having brain, ie being good in tactic and strategy, SGZ shows nothing about it. Beside he was never in the same rank as Guan, Zhang, Huang and Ma. The highest title he held was 镇东将军, (Commander/General of the Eastern Defence), while Huang Zhong was Hou Jiang Jun 后将军 (rear general). There is a big gap between the two.

Zhang Fei was a better tactican than Zhao Yun as shown by the existing historical evidence, as he managed to surprise Zhang He in a mountain in Han Zhong.

He held civil positions as well as military, his rescue of Huang Zhong and repelling of the Wei army showed brains, he warned against Zhao Fan, proposed Xiahou Lan be in charge of army laws and proposed not giving the treasury of Cheng Du to the troops. Source is annotations to the SGZ and ZZTJ includes them but you might not agree with them?

I don't deny Zhang Fei was far superior but Zhao Yun does seem to have been a fairly smart man.

Zhang Fei has a good record but, his flaws in my opinion make him not as skilled as Zhao Yun, was he more important to Shu? Yes, Zhang Fei was.

And if you are using the game as evidence, then you are in the wrong part of the forum...

That "strength but no brains" image, as well as his image as a drunkard, are just created by the novel.

So was Maeda Toshiie (前田利家). I think Zhao Yun was at least a stand up guy who was good for various of things, but like Maeda, he had never been in a major position. Both Maeda and Zhao (they were both handsome too according to history)were not as brilliant as Hideyoshi and/or Zhang Liao per se, but they were good Second-Man, 2ICs etc.

Hmm if u compare Maeda Toshiie to Zhao Yun, i think zhao yun more better than Maeda, Wei general still afraid of zhao yun, eventhough zhao in its old age. It's just that there is no a detail of Zhao Yun achieve great thing just like Zhang Liao did, when he defend Jie Ting from sun quan's armies. If i compare zhao yun and zhang liao, i'll definitely still choose zhao yun over zhang liao.
I wonder.... :-?

Hey Maeda was not bad. However can you support you view with evidence? I don't see anywhere in SGZ, ZZTJ that says Zhao Yun was feared by Wei. The achievements of Zhang Liao have been shown in histories clearly.

I know Maeda wasn't bad, but i prefer zhao yun over him :) Maybe i referenced this state in SGYY (sorry about that) zhao yun feared by wei officer, that cheng wu, son of cheng yu, put a trap for him because he knew zhao yun will take the bait. I look on SGZ to make sure the state of zhao yun feared by wei officer exist, eventhough i doubt it :(
I wonder.... :-?
