Have you managed to find another one of Musashi? Rarely do they match up the Cromwell-'warts n'all' image presented by legend.
Nope, not made of painters of the time, but i have read quite a few of the books incl his own 5 rings. that mentioned him over the years. either as a main character or as a background for which to make comparisons.
BUT there is one site i will find were there is loads about him and Yoshitsune the OTHER prototypical Samurai (Yoshitsune has also been claimed to be an originator for much of the legendary skills that Ninjas should have possesed, having learned it from Tengu's duing his escaped up into the hills and mountains of Iga) The problem is that i am not very good at Kanji so you would have to take over.
By the way, his own people (Does who knew him) never said his was 'dirty' only that he look permanently down on his luck and whit longer and longer hair as he grew older.
In fact the portrayal of him by Toshiro Mifume in the Samurai trilogy from 1954-56, is probably the best of him as a real live character from what i have read, whit all his faults and weaknesses and also his mono-mania in becoming the best there is, in his quest for perfection, this does not mean only as a swordsman, but as a swordsman AND balanced human being.
By the way his decendants (Not directly, he never had children) numbers more than 150 people today directly and more than a thousand that can use his family name (Miyamoto, also the name of the village were he grew up)
But no matter what, he was a fasinating character, and still is
My motto would be 'Truth will out, but no truth is absolute'.
We all should look for the truth, no matter how painful or obnoxious it might be. but we always have to keep in mind that any truth we find will be coloured by both our self as well as those that createt it. an absolute truth is always impossible to reach since we as species by nature is falible. the greatest danger is when we convinces our self that the truth we know is the only truth that counts.
Worth remembering that truth is not the same as law of reality. IE the law of gravity no matter how it is describet is always as law that counts, likewise all other natural laws, it is only our incomplete grasp of them that can make them seem inconsistent or untruthfull.
