I'm thinking of holding another gathering for CHF members based in Singapore during December. It will again be held at my place. Different from last time, we will be watching videos on chinese history

The Video program is generally as follow:

1. Documentary on Qinshihuang (in english)

2. Two episodes VCD 13 on Genghis Khan drama (in chinese), featuring Mongols war against Jin Empire

If time permit, we can also watch Han Wu Dadi.

Liang Jieming will be bringing his projector, and I will use my laptop.

Is 17th of December (Saturday) convenient for you? If not, please let me know any date? I need to book the multi-purpose hall..

GZ, I may be in Shanghai that week, and if not, I will still have an NUS class reunion cum Christmas Party to attend on 17 Dec. So you will probably have to count me out this time. Sorry!

How long are they by themselves and in total? Rather than just a viewing session it might be good to take a short break in between for discussion. Presumably the 2 episodes you are choosing for Genghis Khan is in the middle of the story, it would be good if you or someone gives an overview of Gengis Khan, and how what they are about to see falls into history. A sypnosis of the episodes will be good as well since we may have non-Mandarin speakers at the viewing. You can highlight scenes they should watch out for historicity etc.

Logistics wise I will bring some snacks. Chocolates are my thing. So unless someone objects that's what you can look forward to on that day.

The 17th works ok for me.

Ok lah, assuming I have no classes running that day my projector should be available, failing which I'll bring my OHP instead. Huh? That won't do? Hmm... well, better not have a class running then.

Since Yun cannot come during December, why not delay it till January?

I think December is quite a rush. I'm also superbusy during December. I can do a small presentation (in both english and chinese) before the video starts so that you guys can have an overview about the history.

How about say 8th of January 2006?

I am not going to confirm anything....cos my job don't have a fixed schedule. So, I can only confirm about a week before the gathering.

I'll check if I'm able to book the multi-purpose room on 8th of January.

Anyway, the tentative revised program is as follow (timing is estimated):

1300 - 1330 : Members' arrival

1330 - 1400 : A short presentation on Qinshihuang by GZ (in both English and Chinese - 15 mins each). I'll include a brief overview over entire chinese history.

1400 - 1500 : Video Documentary on Qinshihuang (English)

1500 - 1530 : Discussion on Qinshihuang and Tea Break (English or Chinese or any convenient language)

1530 - 1600 : A short presentation on Genghis Khan and Mongol by GZ (in both English and Chinese - 15 mins each)

1600 - 1700 : Video Drama Series on Genghis Khan (chinese episode 19 & 20 featuring Mongol's War against Jin)

1700 - 1730 : Discussion on Genghis Khan (English or Chinese or any convenient language)

Note that I'm not an expert on those subject, thus my short presentation will only provide an introduction to them, which will probably give you a small background to the videos.

Sounds good, maybe some of the other knowledgable members can volunteer to give some of the talks. Yun, Snowybeagle for example? It would be great to hear different speakers. Liang Jieming can talk about sieges of the Jin cities by the Mongols.

Off-Topic but... when are you coming back to Singapore? We will have another gathering then, official CHF or otherwise.

Talks by Yun or Liang Jieming can be done next time and not during this gathering as we don't have enough time to squeeze so many talks in one gathering.

You already seen my program, in which watching videos and my talk already taken up most of the afternoon. I was even thinking, half hour presentation is not enough for my talk. The documentary on Qinshihuang takes about 1 hour and 2 episodes on Genghis khan takes about 65 minutes.

Actually I was referring to having the talks you listed done by different people. For example you could do QinShiHuang and Yun can do Ghengis Khan for example. As for Liang Jieming I figured he will commenting anyway on the sieges thus it is a kind od 'talk'

Oh i see.. then perhaps, that could lessen my load... then you will have to check with Yun whether he wants to do the Genghis Khan presentation. I know more about Qinshihuang, so I'll definitely do the Qinshihuang presentation, but I don't know whether Yun wants to do the Genghis Khan presentation.

As said, there cannot be more than 2 talks on that day, as the amount of time we have to squeeze 3 talks is not enough, because we have videos to watch. Liang Jieming's talk on Siege Weapons can be postponed till next gathering. But for this gathering, our focus subject will be on Qinshihuang and Genghis Khan. This time, we will focused on chinese history for these two chinese historical figures, rather than zoom in on a small topic on chinese weaponry, as that will provide you with a clear background on chinese history.

I'm doing a bilingual presentation (in both english and chinese) as I do think such will benefit all members. English is done for those who don't understand chinese, but there are certain things in chinese history that are hard to explain in english, so I actually prefer to explain those in chinese. Anyway, CHF do encourage all members to learn and practise chinese language, so in actual fact, I'm helping to promote chinese language as well.

And sorry, the date should tentatively be 7th of January 2006 (Saturday), not 8th (Sunday), as I want it to be on Saturday, not Sunday as some members go to Church on Sunday. I haven't confirmed it, as I'm still trying to book the multi-purpose room.

Actually I would like to volunteer to do the Genghis Khan, as it is a period of history I am quite familiar with his military campaigns including those of his successors.
