I just wanted to list some map resources. I was originally looking for ancient war maps or tactical maps since I know we have such a strong prevalence of Chinese warfare experts here at CHF. Unfortunately I had a heck of a time finding any. If anyone has any maps they wish to share, please contribute!!!

Maps, archaeology, art, divinities, people (emperors), historical sites, historical illustrations, technology, customs, stereotypes, and Middle Eastern images, compiled by City University of New York. The maps look like they are all scanned and have poor quality, however they do the job in portraying dynasty borders. The quality is kind of crummy, but the other pictures on here I thought could be helpful.

Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection is a great resource. Huge selection of thematic (specific area) maps, showing agricultural regions, industry, military regions, pop density, precipitation, linguistic groups, etc. However, most thematic maps are outdated from the 70’s or 80’s. Many maps you see on the internet you will also find here as well.

This site is amazing. Not only does it have a semi-interactive map of the Silk Route, it contains a database with over 100,000 manuscripts, paintings, and artifacts from Dunhuang and other Silk Road sites. A great map which is broken down into quadrangles and somewhat interactive. Click a quadrangle and the section is maximized.

Here are some early maps designed by Russian cartographers in late 19th and early 20th century. Mostly autonomous regions; Tibet, Taklamakan Desert, Khotan, Kashgar, and Urumqi. However they may be hard to read, they are still cartographic masterpieces…hand drawn! I’m in the process of opening the images stored in the catalog link .zip file. I will be sure to get them posted as soon as I can.

I'd like to point out in the first link to the Taiwan maps, it also contained several tables of Linguistics studies. People who are interested in Linguistics and those who knows Malay should take a look.

Very interesting. To tell you the truth, I don't even know some of the tribes listed on there....
