Hi guys.

I have been wanting to do this for a while.
How the hell do I draw?

Well, I don't have models.
And by now I have kinda memorized the armor patterns etc of the Zhanguo era.

So here is a series of WIP...
aka Work in Progress.

The first panel shows a quick sketch.
You have to be rather familiar with shape and form to begin with.
For me I was drawing stick figures at grade 7 (sec1).
Crappy people at grade 8.
Less crappy people and less impossible moves at grade 9.
Dwarves and many fanatasy creatures at grade 10.
And so on.

An art lesson proved pretty useful in my second year in college.
At least I knew how to draw hands now. The model I worked from is my own hands.
Once you have drawn like...5000 hands you'd be pretty tight and need not look at your own hand anymore.
Not for me though...I have yet to reach 1000...

Posted Image
In this first panel I started off by drawing quick outlines.
I tried to feel the movement of the people.
I was doing a lot of the actions these people were doing while drawing.
Like aiming the crossbow, etc.

My preferred media is always a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil.
I know I have to diversify, but hey, I am a bloody amateur.

This thread will be updated as I go.

Ok...

This is the second panel.
I added a few guys here and there to give more of a crowding effect...(if there's such a thing).

Very few shading has been applied...basically I'm doing a rather bad outlining job.

In this you always want to start from the guy that is most in front of you...so then you wouldn't make silly overlaps etc.

You know, I can never make a bleed look real(must learn!). Is this also going to be part of the zhanguo mod?

In here I made some corrections.

1 thing I like about pencil is that its easier to make corrections.
And that its precise.

I outlined the defenders first...

I envy your skill.

Good job at showing all the Chaos and bloodiness of the battle...like that guy with a spear (or bolt?) in the gut.

Well it looks rather good, perhaps you should put in some shading, because the images look rather bland. And perhaps try to ink it once it's finished. Otherwise it's better than what I can draw. I can only draw manga and ROT3K Officer Portraits. (Mind you they do look very good. I think I'll scan my Guan Yu drawing into the computer and show it to you guys.)

Very nice, Seph! Just one little point - the ji-halberd shaft wouldn't be broken neatly like that even by a sword slash. You'll have to add some splintering.
The dead have passed beyond our power to honour or dishonour them, but not beyond our ability to try and understand.

I dropped this picture...
Its too crappy come to think of it.
But here's something better.

TIP:
Don't care about details when you sketch.
Just let your pencil flow...
And use real poses if you can...
I didn't have a real pose, so I spent a lot of time staring at my hands to draw the hands...
And I did a lot of strange poses on the chair and start imagining how I looked...
But in the end I used an original from HFLY...that's helpful.

Here's the sketch...

If you want to do face realistically, the only suggestion I have is:
Do 10000 faces.
I cannot reemphasize the importance of practice (something I neglect all the time).

For those really interested in doing art, I recommend a book:
The Natural Way to Draw, by Nicolaides.
And incessant practice is the most important way to learn.
Draw, and draw, and draw...and draw.

Here is the previous sketch with lines filled in.

Notice that the mechanic pencil has failed to give the difference in line thickness.
So true artists do not draw with mechanic pencils.
I am an amateur so I get away with that.
But I wasn't pleased with the result.

In any case we would be moving on to the next step known as:
COLORING USING PHOTOSHOP!!!
With step by step instructions for helpless babies.

It doesn't matter.

A few tips for wannabe Adobe PS users.

Helpful short cuts
<<Ctrl +>> and <<Ctrl ->> for zooming in and out
<<[>> and <<]>> for decreasing and increasing brush/eraser/pencil/many other things quickly

OK...lets get started by opening the bad pencil art that was exhibited just then...

Put new layers for different base colors.
You can name the layers to be HORSE, ARMOR etc for easier reference.
This is what it looks like after around 15 minutes of coloring...(btw, get a digital tablet if you can...its easier)

Some basic highlighting is done.
I am still an amateur at shading and making hair...it kinda sux right now.
