1. 1840年(道光20年),英國因鴉片貿易問題派遠征軍入侵中國,因有鴉片戰爭(英人稱為商務戰爭)。

2. 1841年(道光21年),英艦「納爾不達(Nerbudda)」號進犯基隆港,砲擊二沙灣砲台,守軍在淡水廳同知曹謹指揮下還擊,英船受創,且於退出基隆港時又觸礁破損,清軍格殺英軍10名、印度兵22人、俘虜132人,英艦匆忙乘船遁去。
1841 Nerbudda invaded Keelong, and was damage during canon fire, during retreat was stranded on reef. Qing soldiers killed 10 British, 22 Indian and took 132 Prisoners. The rest left on smaller ships.
3. 後英軍派船懸白旗入基隆港,表示願以每名俘虜各洋銀百元贖回,但為清軍所拒,英艦乃發砲攻擊二沙灣砲台,清軍亦發砲還擊。英艦因見清軍海防部署嚴密,只得退去。
The British hang a white flag and sailed into Keelong to negociate for prisoner release for the price of 100 silver per prisoner. Qing refused, so the British again openned fire. After fire exchanges, Brish withdraw.
4. 1842年(道光22年)初,另有一艘英艦「阿恩(Ann」號窺伺梧棲外海。總兵達洪阿一方面命加強海防,另方面僱募漁船誘引英船入港,英船入港後船坐礁擱淺,清軍乘機攻擊,結果俘虜英軍19人,印度兵30人,廣東人5名。
1842, another ship, the Ann, anchored outside of WuQi harbor. General DaHongAh ordered to lure the ship into a section of the harbor and strand it on a reef. After attack, Qing took 19 British prisoners, 30 Indian prisoners and 5 Cantonese prisoner.
2. 清廷下令處死戰俘

1. 台灣地區中英戰爭的捷報傳抵京師,清廷除嘉勉地方官外,並要求從英軍俘虜中「訊取確實供詞」。
The news of success reported back to the Qing court. Qing court awarded the officials and ordered to extract useful information from the prisoners.
2. 清廷還下令「取供之後,除夷人頭目暫行禁錮,候旨辦理,其餘各逆及上年所俘獲132名,均著即行正法,以抒積怨而快人心。」
Then Qing ordered "after the information is extracted, aside the leaders of the foreigners, other prisoners including those from the Nerbudda should be excuted immediately. That way it releaves the anger of the people".
3. 台灣鎮總兵達洪阿、兵備道姚瑩遭革職
After Qing lost the war, the British pressured Qing into punishing generals Da HongAh and Yao Yin. They lost their positions.
1. 1842年(道光22年),清軍於中英鴉片戰爭中戰敗,被迫簽訂南京條約,雙方交換戰俘。但英談判全權公使樸鼎查(Pottinger)公使知悉在台灣的俘虜中只剩9人和兩名廣東及奸細,其餘皆已被處死,大表憤慨,認為完全違反人道主義,並要求將總兵達洪阿、兵備道姚瑩二人治罪。達洪阿、道姚瑩雖皆為有作為的官員,但仍不免因昧於人道主義而遭革職。
1842, Qing lost the war and were forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing. Both sides exchanged prisoners. But the British negociator Pottinger was infuriated after founding out only 9 prisoners and 2 Cantonese spys in Taiwan were alive, the rest has been excuted. He considered this act against humanity and demanded the two officials be punished.
