restoring the power of the eunuchs after he had earlier eliminated them, because he didn't trust anyone else
executing Yuan Chonghuan
executing the generals and officials of every city and prefecture that fell to the rebels
refusing to accept that the rebels were reacting to their hunger and the corruption of the government
In short, I think he was paranoid and bad at handling stress.

I think the last comments are most apt. He wasn't a useless Emperor, but he (like most of his Ming predecessors) placed too much trust in the eunuchs, accepted ill-counsel, but most of all he seemed to be a person unsuited to take the drastic measures needed to rectify the worsening situation in the North and overcome the factions to unite the country and overcome the rebels (and ultimately not need the 'assistance' of the Manchu.

why were they considered great generals?
is that about their ranking or their abilities?

a few like Wu Sangui, are very high generlas of ming Dynasty.it was him who let the manchu army through Shanhaiguan.and it was also him who help the manchu defeat the rebel Li Zicheng who had defeated ming .and yes most of these were high ranks in charge of their postitions in city and ,li Yongfang, a Chinese general, surrended the city of Fushun to the Manchus in 1618.

But if you think drinking bacon fat is going to make you lose weight, you can drink as much as you want, you are still going to be the fattest a*** in the world.
Chongzhen is one such example... working hard, towards the wrong direction.
