Hi hi , one of the 3K characters I am very fascinated by is Sun Shang Xiang, Sun Quan's sister who married Liu Bei all thanks to Zhou Yu's misfired plot.

she's supposedly quite chio heehee, if u have been playing the video games or watching the 3K drama that have her

Besides the stuff in ROTK, are there any other background info or details on her?

The name Sun Shangxiang 孙尚香 was a fictional one from recent Chinese operas of the story. The real name of Sun Quan's sister is not recorded. The Sanguo Zhi only records that after Liu Bei became governor of Jingzhou, Sun Quan was a little apprehensive about his influence and sent his sister to be a wife of Liu Bei. Liu Bei did not himself go to the Wu capital to get his wife.

The Sanguo Zhi states that Lady Sun was indeed a 'tough cookie' who took after her father and brothers. Even after her marriage to Liu Bei, she had herself guarded by 100 sword-bearing maidservants whenever Liu Bei visited her chamber. Clearly she was afraid that Liu would mistreat her out of his enmity towards Sun Quan. Zhuge Liang also mentioned once that Liu Bei was worried about Lady Sun plotting against him. Liu even left Zhao Yun behind after he went campaigning in Yizhou, because Lady Sun was arrogant and abused her authority. She also had quite a number of Wu officials and soldiers under her command even when she was living with Liu Bei. Soon, Sun Quan did send ships to bring her back to Wu, and she tried to leave with Liu Shan. She did NOT have to be tricked with a story about her mother being on her deathbed. Zhao Yun was able to get Liu Shan to stay, but Lady Sun probably hated Liu Bei so much that she was willing to pay the price of leaving her son forever.

Not the picture of conjugal bliss that you see in the novel, eh? But very typical of marriage alliances made for political reasons.
The dead have passed beyond our power to honour or dishonour them, but not beyond our ability to try and understand.

Hmm then the Sanguo Zhi version is really much more harsher and less romantic than ROTK man. In ROTK, Lady Sun was a much more pleasant and faithful woman. If I dun remember correctly, the motivations in ROTK explaining why she tried to leave for Wu with Liu Shan was because she was tricked by Sun Quan into believing that her mum was sick.

*** *** i liked the Sun Shangxiang in one drama version of San Guo Yan Yi (not the standard one they just finished showing on TV but one warped version that added more twists to the plot). so pretty.

well, thanks for the details, Yun. Btw, wad's ur thesis about?

I know I have heard that the relationship was not like in the book. (I too found this disappointing.) However, I have also heard that she was one of Liu Bei's primary wives. Is this politically then or was she actually doing something of use for him? I also have heard about three different versions of her leaving. One being what you mentioned, another being that she did leave for her mom (and no I believe someone actually has that out there as fact and since i can't read Chinese I can never be too sure), and a third actually stating that she helped Liu Chan with his ruling.

I think another thing I find confusing is that for having so little infor on her, we somehow know she was like her brothers and dad and that. Is there an English SGZ bio of her out there that can help clear up any discrepencies?

I even read, on Wikpedia I think, that she was close to Sun Quan because of knowing him longer but had been looked after by Sun Ce and Da Qiao and that it was Xiao Qiao and Zhou Yu who married her off. Of course that site also had bios for the Qiao sisters and said their names were Da and Xiao becuase those names are in a poem. Any info ont hat wouldbe appreciated too. So I guess, is there any other good solid writings on Shang Xiang and the Qiaos?

Some people claimed that the story is fake. I know it's in Zhao Yun's SGZ bio but this part of his bio was added by Pei Songzhi from "Zhao Yun Bie Zhuan". People still debate the accuracy of "Zhao Yun Bie Zhuan" because it's not a real book but collections of tales about Zhao Yun.

Zhao Yun was an ordinary general who didn't have high rank but he was generous to the people and the people loved him. That's why folk tales about him started to emerge, including the famous chang ban rescue.
