Wei Zi Fu (卫子夫) is han wu di (汉武帝)'s wife.
She was a palace girl working for Princess Ping Yang (平阳) - the emperor's sister. She was given the job to look after han wu di (Crown Prince at the time) when his grandmother (窦皇后 ) tried to get rid of him (his emperor father was sick) and put her own son on the throne instead.
Wei Zi Fu later became Liu Che's wife (han wu di).
The movie that you watched. It's not mandarin is it? What dialect is it?
EDIT: Wow! You're from Australia? So am I!

Yes, she is real but it is a tragic for her. She was the second empress of Wudi after Empress Chen was deposed.

During the end of Han Wudi reign, his power was severely weakened. Open war broke out between rival families of the Empress Wei and the Li clan. The Li family killed most of Empress Wei's family and forced Empress Wei to commit suicide.Others believe that since the emperor was supsicious of his son by Empress Wei, the emperor killed him. This cause great depression for Empress Wei, perhaps leading to her suicide.

I posted this elsewhere in October last year, and it tells the real story:
Quote
It was commonly said at the time that Han Wudi could go for 3 days without food, but not one day without a woman.
Wei Zifu was originally a dancing girl in the service of Han Wudi's sister, the Princess of Pingyang. One day, the 18-year-old emperor paid a visit to the Princess and was being entertained by the dancing girls. Wei Zifu was beautiful, had a great singing voice, and was giving flirting looks to Han Wudi throughout the performance. Han Wudi got really turned on, and ordered her to follow him to the changing room, ostensibly to help him make a change of clothes. He then had sex with her in the changing room. When he returned to the palace, he brought Wei Zifu with him.
Han Wudi had so many concubines (several thousand) that he then forgot about Wei Zifu for more than a year. One day, he was going through the names of concubines to send away the older or less attractive ones and make room for new ones, and he came across Wei Zifu's name and remembered her. He called her to his bed that night, and she became pregnant and bore him a daughter. Over the next ten years, two more daughters followed, and then Han Wudi's first son (Liu Ju). For bearing a son, and because Han Wudi was so captivated by her, Wei Zifu was made empress by deposing the current empress, Chen A'jiao.
However, Wei Zifu and her son the Crown Prince both met a tragic end. The Crown Prince was framed by a corrupt minister for using black magic to curse the emperor, and in desperation tried to resist arrest with an improvised army of released convicts. They were defeated, and he committed suicide by hanging himself. The emperor sent his ministers to get the empress' seal from Wei Zifu, and knowing that she was disgraced and her entire clan was doomed, she too hanged herself. Several tens of thousands of people, including the entire Wei clan, were executed or killed themselves in connection with this incident. Only a grandson of the Crown Prince, only a few months old, was spared (although his mother was killed). He eventually rose to be the emperor Xuandi (Sephodwyrm's favourite emperor).

BTW, Wei Zifu 卫子夫 was a half-sister of the famed Han general Wei Qing 卫青, and an aunt of the equally famous general Huo Qubing 霍去病. Her mother Wei Ao 卫媪 had already been a maid of the Princess of Pingyang, and was very promiscuous. From various affairs with unidentified men, she had borne one son and three daughters:
Wei Zhangjun 卫长君 (the son)
Wei Junru 卫君孺 (eldest daughter)
Wei Shao'er 卫少儿 (second daughter)
Wei Zifu (youngest daughter)
Later, she had an affair with Zheng Ji 郑季, an official on the Princess' husband's staff, and bore another son - Wei Qing.
Wei Shao'er took after her mother in sexual behaviour - she had an affair with Huo Zhongru 霍仲孺 and bore Huo Qubing. And Wei Zifu of course had her fateful encounter with Han Wudi in the changing room.
Upon Wei Zifu's rise to the position of empress, the entire Wei family was granted high positions or married to high officials. Wei Junru was married to General Gongsun He 公孙贺, Wei Shao'er was married to Chen Zhang 陈掌, great-grandson of Liu Bang's advisor Chen Ping, and Wei Qing and Huo Qubing became the key generals in the new war against the Xiongnu. Wei Qing even married the Princess of Pingyang, his mother's old employer, after the Princess' husband passed away.
Fortunately for Wei Qing, he had passed away by the time the Wei clan was massacred. As for the Huo family, they were not considered as part of the Wei clan, and they entered the limelight when Huo Guang 霍光 (Huo Qubing's half-brother) was chosen by Han Wudi to be the mentor of his young successor Liu Fuling 刘弗陵 (Han Zhaodi). The Huo clan eventually got too powerful and arrogant for its own good as well, and was massacred after Huo Guang's death. But that is another story for another time.

btw, the story of Xuan Di is a lot more sudden and fanatastic.
After his father was killed, the entire clan was suppose to be executed to prevent future danger. Yet the the baby of the crown prince was hidden by a prison guard who fed him. He gave the baby the name of Liu Bing Yi(someone who just passed sickness)since the baby just had fever and was cured.
It was said that there was a golden light on top of the prison that day. People said that the light meant that there would be an emperor from the prison in the future. Obviously, thats rebellious so Wudi ordered his guards in to search. The guards massacred a lot of people so no one would be a future therat. When the imperial guards found out the baby was still alive they asked for it. Yet the prison guard refused. The imperial guards said: thats the emperor's order, if you disobey you could loose your head. So they told Wudi. Yet Wudi been the moody person that he is, simply said, this is the will of heaven. And granted pardon to all the prisoners! Thus Liu Bing Yi was freed, although he is now a commoner and not part of the royal family. Because he grew up with the poor, he knew their hardship and always helped them when he was emperor, in contrast with his tyrranical grandfather.
Later when emperor Wu died, and his successor hardly sat on the throne and died as well. the empress dowager and Huo Guang thought of Bing Yi and thought bing yi unlike the other royal families is very caring for the poor so chose him as the emperor.
