Read part 3 (forthcoming) of my article on Chen An to see how the glaive legend may have come about...

It is really Guan Yu has 3 tombs? One where Cao Cao rest the head, one by Sun Quan to rest the body and one by Liu Bei contain only his clothes?

Did archelogists ever opened them to study?

I don't think the story about Sun Quan sending the head to Cao Cao is true.

Agreed. I love how that is obviously something you can get in a martial arts store just down the road. Chinese ignorance of chinese culture saddens me

OK, the Chen An article is finished: http://www.chinahist...wtopic=6944&hl=

Read it and let me know if you agree that that's where Guan Yu and Zhang Fei got their weapons from.

I've visited the 2 tombs of Lord Guan - (Wei - Cao Cao) Luoyang (Head)
- (Wu - Sun Quan) Dangyang (Body)

It just feels wierd - when i was there, i sort of had a mixed feelings.
I believe i did feel the presence of Lord Guan, not sure though. :cry^:

Guan Yu's tomb in Dangyang 当阳, Jingzhou:

OK, it seems that there are two mentions in the records of Guan Yu's head being sent to Cao Cao. One is in the Wu Li 《吴历》, which was written by Hu Chong 胡冲 towards the end of the Three Kingdoms period. It reads: "权送羽首于曹公,以诸侯礼葬其尸骸。" (Sun Quan sent Guan Yu's head to Cao Cao, and buried the body with the honours due to an aristocrat.) The passage is cited in the Pei's commentary for the SGZ bio of Guan Yu.

The second is in Cao Cao's biography: "权击斩羽,传其首。" (Sun Quan attacked and beheaded Guan Yu, and sent his head [to Cao Cao].)

But there is no record of Cao Cao having buried Guan's head in Luoyang.
The dead have passed beyond our power to honour or dishonour them, but not beyond our ability to try and understand.
