Li DingGuo(1621——1662), also lastnamed as LingYu or HongYuan, was s adopted son of Zhang XianZhong, one of rebellion leaders at the end of Ming dynasty, and the second of Zhang’s 4 highest ranked generals. After the death of Zhang, DingGuo and Sun KeWang, another general of the four, surrendered to Zhu YouLang’s South-Ming reign.
Using his famous elephant troop, he was so successful in expanding the territory, that he even took Changsha periodly from southwest of china and killed the Qing’s well-known Prince KanNi.
In return for his remarkable work, Zhu YouLang made him a Prince XiNing, which made Sun KeWang in deep jealousy. After unsuccessful plots of killing DingGuo and replacing YouLang, KeWang surrendered again, this time to Qing. DingGuo had to turn to a pose of defense then and retreated to YunNan, the base of South-Ming at that time.
This withdrawing seemed have been waited by Qing for a long, afterwards, three troops, one led by Wu SanGui and one by Hong ChengChou, stroke YunNan and GuiZhou. While DingGuo fighting hard to protect YouLang and his reign, the emperor ran away to Burma, not even telling DingGuo. He failed in asking YouLang’s returning for dozen times, and then had to retreat to Burma too. He died in Burma. At dying, he asked his sons:” You’d better die in the wild then surrender ( to Qing ).”
